Slate Truck EV details released: What to know

  • Slate will begin deliveries of its electric trucks later this year.
  • There will be tons of customization options, with over 100 wraps available.
  • The slate truck will start in the mid-$20,000 range instead of below the promised $20,000 mark.

Slate Automotive’s electric pickup is getting closer to production. The new automaker plans to begin deliveries later this year, and when they do, customers will get a very basic vehicle that they can customize.

Every vehicle manufactured by Slate will roll off the assembly line with gray plastic body panels. Customers can add color via wraps, with the automaker offering 54 basic wraps and 50 others with metallic finishes and designs.

Peter Faricci, CEO of Slate Automotive, told detroit free press The company will start printing designs for customers from next year. Customizability is a big part of the ownership experience, and Slate will allow customers to order features even after purchasing the truck.

This allows someone to convert their slate truck into an SUV, or they can hire someone to do it for them. Components like seats and seat belts have sensors to ensure the person is installing them correctly, while an app will notify owners about the difficulty of the job.

Expected surge in slate price

When Slate originally announced its electric truck, it said the starting price would be under $20,000. That’s no longer the case – the company now says it’ll be priced in the mid-$20,000 range, and that appears to be true.

according to The AutopianSome leaks claim that the slate will have a starting price of $24,950, excluding destination charge. The company plans to sell the vehicle in all 50 states, but it’s unclear how Slate will accomplish that.

The automaker will reveal the official starting price of the EV on June 24. Only then will it begin accepting $300 reservations for the vehicle. This limited the $50 reservations to 160,000.

Motor1’s Opinion: The slate’s EV isn’t the promised $20,000 truck, and we hope it won’t disappoint buyers. There is a dearth of affordable vehicles in the market and even if it is an EV, it could be an option for many. We just hope the options don’t push the price up too much.
