Zay’s music-reaction videos are the last real thing on our bankrupt internet

Zay's music-reaction videos are the last real thing on our bankrupt internet

You are now entering Pavement, Built to Spill, Wilco…

This is where comments help me a lot. Growing up, I was definitely into 90’s, 2000’s R&B, like Michael Jackson. Now I’m getting into some hip-hop that I had never even heard of, like Souls of Mischief. I hadn’t heard about it because I’m young.

Are you a musician yourself?

No, though, I really like it. I don’t know how to play. I don’t know how to sing. I just love the way it sounds.

I think the appeal of your videos is that you’re so open-minded about it, which is something we don’t think about in your generation.

Absolutely. Everyone is just ready for their same artists, same shows, same clothes…

What have you liked so far? What have you heard again?

I love ministry, I can’t lie. tool. Cocteau Twins. We got some Sonic Youth, New Order, Boards of Canada… oh, Wilco. I also like Wilco a lot.

Ministry and Wilco are too far apart.

What I like about Ministry is that they keep the background noise just right. “Breathe” is a song I really like. They’ll make little screams that echo, but the way it blends in perfectly with the music that’s playing.

Have any of the artists you’ve talked about been in touch with you or tagged you?

Yes, I did not expect this at all. Wilko liked some posts. Jack Black, Erykah Badu, George Clinton…

So what is your plan regarding this? Do you want to earn money from this?

I’ve thought about switching. Of course, I’m still on Reels, but the thing with YouTube is that they’re very strict about copyrighted music, so I don’t really know how to pivot.

I just think it’s so refreshing. We look at shit all day long and some of it resonates, some doesn’t, but I think there’s something great about it. I remember hearing these things for the first time when I was 13, 14 years old and watching you figure it out. And because you’ve become so specific, it really makes an impact on my peers. I’m 43 years old, so all my friends, this is the shit we grew up with. We’re sending it to each other like, “Yo, this guy is so cool! He’s listening to Cat Power.”

This happened because I watched Cat Power Pursuit. I clicked on the profile and saw it on Spotify. I said, “Oh, she makes music!”

What do your parents think?

When things got to this point, he said, “Wait a minute, this could be something.” It’s not guaranteed that you’re going to explode, but they’re excited to see where it can go.

They are supporters. They’re not like, “What are you doing?”

Of course, I’m grateful for that.

Parents, especially if they have kids your age, have to consider this because it’s part of the world now. Before it started, what was your plan, where was your mind?

Well, I wanted to be an actor. I did my headshots and everything, but I can’t really throw myself into something if I’m not passionate. I did background casting, whatever, but over time I started feeling like, “I’m not feeling this.” I started looking at trade school or real estate. It’s hard to set yourself on a specific career. But, I don’t know. Let’s see where this goes.

As long as you commit yourself to it, no matter what, it will work out.

I believe that 100 percent.

I like what you’re doing and I like your attitude.

Thank you. I’m grateful for the community I’ve built there. I don’t know if you’ve seen my comments, but there’s no hate in them. And if it continues like this then it can also go to the moon.
