Williams targets Mercedes power unit trick to boost F1 speed at Spa

Williams steps up pursuit of Mercedes power unit success

Williams is accelerating efforts to decode the Mercedes power unit innovations that have given the works team a clear lead in qualifying sessions. Team principal James Vowles has confirmed that the Grove-based team is working steadily to replicate the system used by Mercedes, which dramatically increases engine performance, despite both teams using the same German-built power unit.

The performance disparity became particularly evident in qualifying, where Mercedes managed to extract excess energy from its power unit at critical points on the track. Volls pointed to recent data from Spa-Francorchamps, which showed that both Kimi Antonelli and George Russell were seen lifting off at the end of the lap – a maneuver that appears to be integral to the activation of the system. The result is exceptional acceleration from the Mercedes W17 out of the final corner, giving the Silver Arrows a decisive launch on the start/finish straight and a solid advantage at the start of the lap.

Williams, which supplies its cars to Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, is determined to close the gap. The team is investing significant resources in understanding and implementing a similar strategy to maximize the potential of its Mercedes power units.

Addressing the technical intrigue during an interview with Sky F1, Vowles highlighted the complexities involved: “So what they’re doing is, effectively, tricking the system to allow energy to be used in a more efficient place, and the compromise is coming over. That’s our best read. Even though we’re a Mercedes customer, that doesn’t mean we have what they have available to them. So we’re pointing in the direction of a similar way of operating the power unit. “Doing my best in the background to work.”

This revelation underlines a key challenge for customer teams at Paddock: the ability to access or replicate the latest innovations developed by their suppliers. Mercedes’ apparent mastery of energy deployment algorithms and their strategic use of lifting technologies have put them one step ahead, prompting rivals to redouble their technological efforts.

Williams’ quest for this elusive advantage reflects the constant arms race in modern Formula 1, where every fraction of a second is hard-fought for through engineering ingenuity and strategic skill. As Walls and his technical team continue their quest, the spotlight rests on whether Williams can unlock the performance of the same race-defining power unit that has propelled Mercedes forward.
