'Smart' running vests, shareable chargers, US 250 shades, and more emerging gear

Cool and colorful is the name of the game this week. Nearly half of this week’s lineup of new gear offers functional outdoor gear in bright colors that reflect the longer days of daylight ahead of us.

From dog kennels to portable batteries to sporty sunglasses, there’s something for everyone to use outdoors — and they might even look good while doing it. We also have some interesting innovations, like a running vest designed to improve safety and a charger that splits between two batteries. Add a new book from famed adventurer Jimmy Chin, and you’ve got an extra-fun lineup to read.

If you’re concerned about safety when running or cycling alone, this “smart” outdoor vest is for you. Netherlands-based startup RunSafePro recently launched a kick For RunSafePro smart vest. This tech piece of gear offers rear radar detection, automatic incident detection, accents for 360-degree visibility, and even a panic button for GPS-based emergency alerts.

According to the campaign description, the vest’s built-in radar can detect a vehicle or cyclist approaching from behind and alert the wearer with lights and vibrations. An accident is detected when the wearer stops moving and does not respond to check-ins on the vest, prompting an automatic SOS and GPS sync to pre-selected emergency contacts.

The vest costs about $114, according to early bird pricing. Users must also pay a subscription fee, although it is currently only $1 per month.

We’ve reviewed two versions of the Adidas Terrex Freehiker in the past: the Freehiker 2 Low and the Freehiker 2 Gore-Tex Hiking Boot. Both received positive marks from reviewers, who praised them as flexible outdoor shoes that serve different purposes without having to master any one.

Now, the brand has released several new models for terex freehiker 3That includes the Freehiker 3, the “most technical offering” of the lineup with the Ultra GTX, Mid GTX, and Low GTX. There’s also the line’s first Freehiker SL, which brings the brand’s proprietary HyperBoost and DreamStrike+ cushioning.

In addition to the Gore-Tex protection and Continental rubber outsole, the shoe aims to provide “weather-resistant durability and reliable traction on all terrains,” the brand said. Various models cost $150-220, and are available on the Adidas Terrex website, as well as REI and Backcountry.

We’re a little picky about the products that celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary. There are many. But these shades from Utah-based Pit Viper are just too much fun not to mention.
