Sooner or later, it seems like every automaker ends up leaking important information about an upcoming car by posting something prematurely on their website. Apparently, Slate decided to get things off the ground quickly (like, producing the first-ever-one-car-quickly), and brilliantly, by leaking the starting price of its bare-bones electric pickup: $24,950.
A reader saw this The AutopianAnd apparently it was not buried that deep. It looks like someone forgot to double-check the metadata on Slate’s preorder page, because it was published with the following text:
The slate truck has all the essentials for a confidential price of $24,950 (reminder: we’re all still under NDA and restricted from sharing this).
Obviously, this isn’t official, but considering that we’re only a week away from the slate’s official pricing announcement (due on June 24), it’s pretty reliable. That’s a lot more money than Slate originally promised, but its original sub-$20,000 price point factored in electric car incentives that are no longer in the picture.
Unfortunately for Slate, this isn’t the only change of pace that will work against its new, cheaper pickup truck. Ford is promising something more full-featured for only a little more money, and on top of that, the slate will also have to compete with the growing surplus of off-lease used EVs that will soon hit the market.
We’ve contacted Slate for comment on this apparently unintentional revelation. We will update this story if we get a response.
