Overlanding is still an extremely popular activity among off-road enthusiasts. People want to seek adventure away from the beaten path. This means more automakers are supplying factory-built vehicles to meet the challenges these buyers are now demanding.
Toyota recently launched its TrailHunter lineup for exactly this reason. First came the Tacoma, then the 4Runner and Tundra, and now the family adds the full-size Sequoia to the mix.

This formula is quite familiar by now. Upgrade the suspension, add underbody protection and some recovery points, and fit a proper set of wheels and tires. That’s what Toyota has done here with the 2027 Sequoia Trailhunter, and that’s because the formula works.
A set of Old Man Emu shocks are placed at all four corners. The TrailHunter-specific 18-inch wheels look great in bronze, and they’re wrapped in Michelin LTX trail tires. Those tires are really a letdown in this package. They are all-season tires and not proper all-terrain tires.
Anyone who really wants to get this truck in the dirt will want to upgrade to a proper all-terrain immediately. However, the rest of the upgrades are a great starting point.
Finally, the Sequoia also comes with Multi-Terrain Select Drive Mode, Crawl Control and a locking rear differential. Underbody protection and recovery hooks are there to help you if you get stuck if you don’t change those tires.
Toyota offers the TrailHunter as a package on the SR5 grade of the Sequoia. I wouldn’t be surprised, however, if we see a completely different trim at some point in the near future.

motor1 tech: Toyota says the TrailHunter package for the 2027 Sequoia will enter production this fall. There’s no word on pricing yet, but it’s good that it’s offered with the entry-level SR5 trim.
Still, I’m surprised Toyota didn’t completely upgrade the truck along the lines of the Tacoma and 4Runner. These get enlarged intakes, better tires and upgraded bumpers. Certainly anyone shelling out the cash for a Sequoia Trailhunter will be happy to pay more for better off-road features.
Don’t be surprised when Real The Sequoia TrailHunter will appear in a few years.
