Ruben Amorim reveals ambitious vision at AC Milan: “I couldn’t be happier – we must score more goals”
AC Milan’s new era began with a sense of purpose and candor as Ruben Amorim addressed the press for the first time as Rossoneri manager, laying out his ambitions and acknowledging the club’s challenges. Appointed on a two-year deal last month, Amorim arrives with the burden of expectations, stepping into the famous San Siro hot seat and replacing Massimiliano Allegri.
Amorim became Milan’s third Portuguese manager in just two years, following the brief tenures of Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceição. In his opening remarks, the former Sporting boss did not shy away from the cultural expectations of his new role: “First of all, I want to apologize for not speaking Italian. I know, especially here in Italy and with the tifosi, that it is important for me to speak Italian, to respect your culture. I promise I will be sharp. I tried on the first day, so I know the importance of speaking Italian at Milan’s Electrifier.”
Amorim’s passion for the club became immediately apparent. “It’s an honor to be here, I’m very happy. I can feel that the city feels like a club here. I’ve felt that way in my first three days in the city. I like (the training ground) Milanello. I think this place has history. It’s cool, people say it’s old, I love that kind of old. There’s everything there. I like the staff. I couldn’t be happier. I feel at home. We’ll see, but so far I’m here. Very happy to come.”
Milan’s new boss revealed that his decision to accept the job came after initial concerns about the direction of the club. “I didn’t accept just because it’s Milan. I went to the first meeting with a lot of worries (laughing) because there was a revolution in our club. But after the first meeting I was the coach of Milan. They didn’t know it, because we still had to discuss the contract. But in my mind after the first meeting I was confident.”
Amorim quickly identified both the strengths and weaknesses of the team he inherited. “I look at the team and there are certain principles of the team that I like. We defend quite well. If you look at the table, we need to score more goals. If you look at the first team in the league, the champions, there is a big gap and we need to focus on that. But I had good meetings on what the team was and what the idea was.”
With his trademark composure and clear-eyed assessment, Ruben Amorim signaled both respect for AC Milan’s prestigious heritage and an unwavering commitment to enhancing the team’s attacking potential. The Rossoneri faithful will be watching closely as this new chapter unfolds under his leadership.
