On November 6th and 7th, the traditional Riga Book Festival will offer a rich programme at the National Library of Latvia

The book market will be supplemented by more than 30 events that will take place in various parts of the library building. Expect meetings with book authors, lectures, discussions, workshops, as well as an international symposium, where industry experts will discuss the crucial role reading plays in the existence of every nation and its language. Admission to the festival is free.

The spectrum of events will be very broad, says Edīte Alksne, Executive Director of the Latvian Book Publishers Association: “That is our goal – to popularize reading as such. This time, 33 publishers are participating, as are non-governmental organizations, including the “Time to Read” movement, the “Baltic Environmental Forum” association, and the “Latvian School Bag” programme. There will be a book exchange point where you can bring a book that has outlived its time on your shelf or take a book with you and fill an empty corner.”

Vilis Kasims will present his latest novel Marijas

Vilis Kasims will present his latest novel “Marijas stāsts” (The Story of Marija), Georgs Rubenis will introduce the book “Sīpoli, diamanti un citi brīnumi” (Onions, Diamonds and Other Miracles), and Jānis Buholcs will present the monograph “Social Media Era”.

The festival will also feature foreign guests – three of them will speak at an event where each will share their experiences on the path to becoming a writer, reveals Alīse Nīgale, a representative of the board of the Book Publishers Association: “All three writers will tell how they became writers, what this path is like, what is the most difficult and interesting part of it. They will be Anti Saar from Estonia, Akvilina Cicėnaitė from Lithuania, both of whom have published books in Latvian, as well as Lawrence Schimel, who is an American author living in Spain and a very active participant in the international book industry. Also present will be Finnish author Mariia Niskavaara and the Italian writer Donatella di Pietrantonio.

There will be a very extensive program of events for children and young people. Signe Ērmane and Ilze Skrastiņa will launch their new books, there will be creative workshops with Daina Tabūna, Marina Heniņš and other authors of children’s literature, as well as a puppet theater performance “Moļļa Ziemīši”.

Bookkeeping professionals, in turn, will gather

Bookkeeping professionals, in turn, will gather at an international symposium, where one of the main questions will be about the crucial importance of reading in the existence of every nation and language. The relevance of the issue is outlined by Dagnija Baltiņa, director of the National Library: “We believe that the future of Latto promote it and take appropriate action

“That is why a reading strategy is being created and we host an international reading symposium every year at the National Library. This year’s program promises to be very interesting as well. We have lecturers from Finland, Norway, and Ukraine who will share their experiences. But it will also be valuable to hear from our various partners from Lats,” she says

The event programme is available on this website.
