Pedro Acosta has made a clear leap forward in his debut MotoGP season, yet persistent technical setbacks and physical challenges have slowed a brilliant campaign. Despite finishing seventh in the championship standings – the same as last year – Acosta scored 24 more points, showing remarkable progress with KTM’s developed machinery.
During the mid-season break, the young Spaniard claimed six podium finishes, including a sprint race win in Thailand and a pole position, doubling the tally from the same stage in 2023 when he achieved just two podiums. However, Acosta’s championship charge was significantly hampered by four non-finishes, the result of a combination of rider errors, mechanical failures and a painful carpal tunnel syndrome that forced him to withdraw and undergo surgery just before the German Grand Prix. Nevertheless, their comeback performance at the Sachsenring showed resilience and a promising second half.
When assessing his season so far, Acosta provided a candid and astute self-assessment. “For the first time, I would give myself 7 marks for my performance,” he admitted. “But if I consider everything that happened during the first half of the season, including all the technical problems, I would give it a 4 rating. We lost a lot of points in Barcelona, Brno and Assen because of these issues, but that’s just the way it is. On average, I would say 5 to 5.5.”
Acosta acknowledged significant personal improvement over the previous year, particularly in reducing rider errors. “I’ve made far fewer mistakes than last year. Now we have to use the summer break to understand where these technical problems come from and find solutions. That’s the goal,” he explained.
Once sitting fourth in the championship, Acosta’s recent struggles have seen them slip down the pecking order, but with half the season remaining, the door is open to a resurgence. Currently enjoying a well-deserved vacation with family in the United States, he revealed plans to visit his hometowns Mazarón and La Manga in Spain before potentially taking part in some NASCAR action. “It would be nice to see some NASCAR,” he said with a smile.
Pedro Acosta’s mix of raw talent, early success and ongoing adversity paints a compelling picture of a rider on the cusp of success – if KTM can solve its persistent technical problems. His measured self-assessment underlines the fine margins that define a MotoGP career and sets the stage for an entertaining second half of 2024.
