Pedro Acosta has been tipped as the rider to become MotoGP’s next superstar, with Chicho Lorenzo declaring, “He could be the next superstar.” The father of multiple world champion Jorge Lorenzo gave a comprehensive technical and strategic analysis of the current MotoGP landscape, highlighting Acosta’s emergence as Marc Márquez’s successor.
During a detailed account on his MotoGPeando channel, Chicho Lorenzo analyzed the extremely competitive 2026 MotoGP season, calling it one of the most closely contested races in recent memory. He revealed his method of analyzing accidents, recording events during race broadcasts and examining them frame by frame afterward. Lorenzo uses artificial intelligence tools to calculate lean angles at the critical moment before front-end loss, underscoring how close riders operate to absolute limits. “They’re so on edge that one degree more and you crash,” he explained.
Referencing Fabio di Giannantonio’s recent crash, Lorenzo said AI-generated data showed a lean angle of around 64 degrees – the current limit for MotoGP machines given the limitations of tyres, suspension and aerodynamics. According to Lorenzo, this very slim difference explains why several riders can tackle the same corner at the same speed, yet only one can end up in the gravel.
Lorenzo also drew parallels between the current championship and the dramatic 2020 season, citing the notable similarity in the standings. With just 24 points separating the five riders after eleven Grands Prix, this scenario is reminiscent of the year when Joan Mir won the title with just one win, as the absence of a dominant force kept the championship wide open. Lorenzo attributed the current unpredictability to Marc Márquez’s injury at the start of the season and the inconsistent form of his rivals.
Turning his attention to Márquez, Chicho Lorenzo praised the Ducati rider’s resurgence: “Marc Márquez is now in full comeback mode,” he insisted, recalling how Márquez was behind the leaders by more than a hundred points, only to be overtaken by several major title contenders. In Lorenzo’s view, the Spaniard is rediscovering the level that made him MotoGP’s benchmark for years.
However, the most important focus of Lorenzo’s analysis was reserved for Pedro Acosta. He praised the young Mercian’s mentality, praising his tireless efforts on a KTM that lags behind the top machines on the grid. “I like Pedro Acosta’s attitude,” said Lorenzo, emphasizing that Acosta’s commitment is more than expected from a rider who has already secured his future. “The easiest thing would be to say: I have signed with Ducati, my future is fixed. Why should I risk everything? But he is doing what he needs to do.”
Lorenzo positions Acosta as the natural successor in a lineage of era-defining riders, listing Valentino Rossi, Dani Pedrosa, Casey Stoner, Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez as the only riders who really made a mark since Rossi’s arrival. “Could be the next Pedro Acosta,” he declared, cautioning that Acosta still had to convert his potential into wins and titles. Nevertheless, Lorenzo observed that no other young rider on the current grid had Acosta’s blend of talent, character and determination.
In closing, Chicho Lorenzo reaffirmed his view on Márquez’s legacy. “I believe that Marc Márquez, for me, is the best in history,” he said, stressing that Márquez’s achievements were made against a field full of legends, unlike in previous eras. Lorenzo further estimated that, without the devastating injuries of 2020, Márquez would have easily added two or three more world championships to his list, surpassing Valentino Rossi’s record.
For Lorenzo, while Marc Marquez remains MotoGP’s defining figure, the future could belong to Pedro Acosta – the rider he believes is ready to become the sport’s next major force.
