Nissan launches a cool new minivan you can't have

  • The Nissan Elgrand minivan launches only in the Japanese market.
  • It is powered by a three-cylinder engine with e-Power hybrid system.
  • Pricing in Japan starts at around ¥6,897,000 ($42,500 USD).

It has been over a decade since Nissan offered a minivan in the United States, as it pulled the Quest from the market due to declining sales. However, Japanese automakers also provide vehicles to people in other countries, including their domestic market.

Last year at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, Nissan showed a new version of its Elgrand minivan. Today, it launches only for Japan. It marks the fourth generation of the Elgrand, which made its debut in 1997.

This new version replaces the old four-cylinder and V6 engines with a new e-Power system, which uses two electric motors to drive the wheels. A 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine generates power for the motors, which drive all four wheels through the e-4ORCE all-wheel-drive system.

It may not have the Infiniti badge, but the Elgrand retains the “grand” part of its name. The top trim level includes luxurious zero gravity captain’s chairs in the second row, which feature a recliner to rest guests’ legs. There’s also an ottoman for the front passenger seat, so the people sitting in the back don’t steal all the luxury. Buyers who need to carry more passengers can spec with a three-seat bench in the second row.

Other premium features include dual 14.3-inch screens for front passengers, 64-color ambient lighting, a 22-speaker Bose audio system (including headrest speakers), Kumiko wood trim, hands-free driving, and rear entertainment screen. If these features weren’t good enough, Nissan also offers a purple interior color.

It’s not easy to make a minivan look “cool”, but the Elgrand at least looks interesting. The exterior has an intricate grill consisting of many square pieces that form a sort of lattice. A large light bar gives the van a futuristic look at the front, as well as a two-tone paint scheme with a rose gold bottom. The wheels match the Elgrand’s futuristic funkiness, as does the one-piece light bar at the rear.

Nissan hasn’t confirmed the Elgrand for any markets outside of Japan, but we’d love to see it come to the US again in the form of the Quest. The Elgrand is on sale now, with prices starting at ¥6,897,000 (about $42,500 USD).

Motor1’s Opinion: Minivan sales rose 21 percent last year to about 400,000 units in 2025 as U.S. buyers look for affordable and practical vehicles. With automakers like Mercedes-Benz set to enter the luxury market with models like the all-electric VLE, Nissan could capture the market with a luxurious hybrid minivan like the Elgrand. With some changes, the Elgrand could also be sold as the Infiniti to help that struggling brand.
