king of baggers
Harley-Davidson ended Hayden Gillim’s four-race Mission King of the Baggers winning streak at Laguna Seca, with Bradley Smith and Kyle Wyman sharing two feature-race victories.
Smith claimed his first Baggers victory in the Saturday opener, before defending champion Wyman won the three-lap challenge on Sunday morning and backed it up with his first full-length victory of the season that afternoon.
Australian Troy Harfoss delivered another consistent weekend for the J&P Cycles/Motul/Vance & Hines Factory Indian team, finishing second and third. Those results reduced Gillim’s championship lead from 25 points to 13 points after the American crashed during Sunday’s race.
Wyman takes the pole before the corkscrew oil shuts off
Kyle Wyman led qualifying on Friday’s Harley-Davidson
Saturday’s Q2 session was red-flagged before the scoring lap was completed when Wyman’s Harley-Davidson accumulated oil through the corkscrew.
Necessary cleanup took up the remainder of the session, leaving Friday’s Q1 order to determine the grid. So Wyman started from pole with Smith and Herfoss.
Smith claims Baggers’ first win
Harfoss made the best start and led the opening laps, but Smith quickly showed that the factory Harley-Davidson had the pace to challenge.
Smith passed the Australian on lap two and quickly broke the tow. By the middle of the nine-lap race they had opened up a gap of almost three seconds and continued to lead.
Herfoss finished second, with Tyler O’Hara, Hayden Gillim and Wyman close behind. O’Hara attacked Herfoss at the Corkscrew on the final lap, diving to the inside to try and regain the runner-up position.
The SDI Racing Indian ran full throttle on the exit and crossed the inside downhill berm. Herfoss finished second, while Gillim capitalized to move up to third and O’Hara dropped to fourth.
Smith crossed the line a clear 4.690 seconds to claim his first Mission King of the Baggers victory. Herfoss finished second, Gillim third, O’Hara fourth and Wyman fifth.
James Rispoli finished sixth ahead of Corey West, Jake Lewis and Rocco Landers.

Wyman escapes penalty and goes one-two ahead of Harley-Davidson
Wyman and Smith again started strong in race two, emerging from the early corners first and second. Harfoss finished third ahead of Gillim at the start, with the leading quartet immediately distancing themselves from the rest of the field.

Gillim overtook Harfoss during the opening stages and set the fastest lap of the race, 1m27.871, more than two-tenths faster than the leading Harley-Davidson.
Gillim’s podium challenge ended at the start of lap five when he spun low at turn two. He recovered and returned to the race, but was out of the top ten before finishing eighth.
Wyman continued to lead Smith, closely matching the lap times of the two Road Glides. The defending champion crossed the line 2.240 seconds ahead on the road, but was later issued a track-limit penalty of two seconds.
The penalty reduced Wyman’s official winning margin to just 0.240 seconds, but was not enough to change the result. Smith completed the Harley-Davidson one-two, with Harfoss third, 7.436 seconds behind.
O’Hara finished fourth ahead of Landers, Rispoli and Corey West. Gillim’s eighth-place finish earned eight potentially valuable championship points.
The win completed a perfect Sunday for Wyman following her previous challenge success and marked her first full-length baggers win of the season.

Wyman wins delayed three-lap Bagger Challenge
The oil cleanup canceled Q2 and also forced the three-lap Bagger Challenge to be moved from Saturday to Sunday morning.
Wyman and Smith immediately put two factory Harley-Davidsons at the forefront. Wyman led every lap, but Smith stayed within striking distance and recorded the fastest lap of the sprint with a 1m27.693.
Wyman won by 0.376 seconds and received the $5000 winner-take-all prize. Gillim finished third, just 0.845 seconds behind the winner, with Herfoss fourth and Rispoli fifth.
Tyler O’Hara was the only non-finisher.

Herfoss and Smith reduce Gillim’s baggers advantage
Gillim remains the Mission King of the Baggers championship leader with 156 points, but his advantage has shrunk considerably.
Harfoss scored 36 points for his second and third place finishes and is now on 143 points, just 13 points behind his teammate. He arrived at Laguna Seca 25 behind Gilim.
Smith was the biggest motivator of the weekend. His win and second place earned 45 points, taking him to 136 points and reducing his deficit to Gillim from 41 to 20.
Wyman is fourth at 113 after finishing fifth with the win. He leads by 43 points, ahead of O’Hara at 90, Rispoli at 82 and Landers at 80.
The Baggers Championship will resume from July 31 to August 2 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
