McLaren recently took the wraps off its latest addition to the 720S, 750S and 765LT supercar series, the 788HS. Those familiar with the brand’s lineage will notice that the 788HS carries the HS designation, which stands for “High Sport” and is reserved for the best examples of the McLaren series. This rare designation ensures the 788HS’s place in McLaren history, as it has been given to only two other models in the brand’s 60+ year history. Being so coveted, the 788HS will offer buyers the option to fully customize their model through McLaren Special Operations.

The cabin is completely driver-centric, featuring carbon fiber that enhances the supercar’s aesthetics while reducing weight.McLaren’s Infotainment System II is present, as is Control Launcher (MCL). These additions ensure complete immersion, though they also make the 788HS livable to the limits of any supercar. In other words, comfort and accommodation are not mere afterthoughts; They are included in the overall package of the 788HS.

Production will be limited to 200 examples globally, with an equal split between coupe and Spyder variants. As mentioned, buyers will have access to customization options through McLaren Special Operations, so there’s a good chance that, if you’re able to get your hands on one, you’ll have a one-off example. Prices aren’t available yet, however, based on previous models in the series, expect it to sit comfortably in the half-million or so ballpark.

The best features of the McLaren 788HS make this series memorable

Like the rest of the series, the 788HS is named after the power it produces: 788 PS, or 777 horsepower. It comes from the unmistakable M840T twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. If that engine code sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the same platform that was used for the previous series models, albeit tuned and specified differently per model.

The 788HS version features many of the same aspects found in the 765LT, although it also gets a unique engine mount calibration that provides better engagement. The McLaren was also able to get more power from the V8, enabling it to sprint to 60 MPH in 2.8 seconds with a top speed of 204 MPH. That 0-60 MPH time is .01 second slower than the 765LT, although road tests have proven the 765LT’s factory figures to be conservative, so we’ll know more about the 788hs’ true potential when someone gets it on track.

Once on the track, it will have everything it needs to impress not only on the straights, but also in the corners, thanks to an advanced chassis that includes the brand’s Proactive Chassis Control III linked-hydraulic suspension system, recalibrated specifically for the 788HS. Its ride height is also 5 mm lower than the 720S, making it more dynamic and attractive with larger brake discs, six-piston front calipers and race-inspired brake cooling ducts derived from the McLaren Senna.

Formula 1-inspired aero that makes a statement before you even start your engine

The expertly sculpted exterior makes a big visual impact, though it’s all functional and gives the 788HS the most advanced aero package ever seen on the platform. Increasing downforce by 10 percent is a new S-duct hood, a raised active rear spoiler and an intricate Formula 1-inspired rear diffuser.

Of course, these aren’t the only body mods, but they are the key features that make mild tuning even more effective. Speaking of, most of the aero and body parts are made from advanced carbon fiber, keeping the 788HS’ curb weight at 2,789 pounds. With 777 hp, the 788HS achieves the highest power-to-weight ratio of the entire series at 614 bhp-per-tonne.

The new McLaren 788HS has been designed and engineered with a specific focus; Providing an amazing experience and captivating drive through the perfect balance of performance, sound, dynamics and individuality. It represents the final expression of our supercar series that began with the 720S and becomes only the third McLaren to wear our HS designation – a fitting finale to a much-loved and critically acclaimed car.
