England manager Thomas Tuchel has given a clear explanation for Bukayo Saka’s up-and-down role during the World Cup, despite the Arsenal winger’s sensational hat-trick in the high-scoring Bronze final against France.
Saka stunned the crowd in England’s thrilling 6-4 win over France in Miami, reigniting debate over his limited involvement throughout the tournament. Saka, once considered a key figure for the Three Lions, was surprisingly absent from the starting lineup until England’s third group stage tie – a low-risk clash against Panama. After being placed on the bench again for the next match against DR Congo, Saka returned to the starting eleven against Mexico, where he provided a vital assist in a narrow 3–2 victory.
Nevertheless, Tuchel made the bold decision to leave Saka unused for the semi-final clash against Argentina, a choice which drew scrutiny after England’s defeat. The coach subsequently reinstated Saka for the bronze final, where the winger responded in emphatic fashion by scoring three times and highlighting his attacking ability.
Addressing the media, Tuchel gave insight into his selection strategy, telling BBC Sport: “He did everything right.” Tuchel emphasized the tactical demands and unpredictable nature of tournament football when revealing the reasoning behind his controversial choices: “I had the feeling in the semi-finals that (Morgan) Rodgers would be involved in something special. That was it. The games themselves are so demanding, so focused on changes because of the ebbs and flows of the game.”
Tuchel clearly praised Saka’s impact, and confirmed the young star’s indispensable status within the team: “Bukayo showed he is a key player. There’s no doubt about that. I didn’t know he had a hat-trick – I lost track of the goalscorers, but fantastic.”
Saka’s stellar performance in the bronze medal has reignited the conversation about his role and value in the national team, with Tuchel’s comments highlighting the deep decision-making and constant tactical adjustment required at the highest level of international football.
