A small study of 16 men tested what a pre-run pint does to a 30-minute effort. Here’s what it means for your 5K.

A beer at the finish line is something of a running tradition. Move it to the starting line, and you have a pretty good research question. If you give the same runner half an hour to cover as much ground as possible, how much difference does the alcohol actually make?
Sixteen physically active men each tried it both ways. After three sessions to get familiar with the test, they completed one 30-minute time trial after drinking 4.8% beer and another after drinking nonalcoholic beer. The amount was scaled to body weight. A 70-kilogram (154-pound) runner would have received 21 grams of alcohol, roughly the amount in a pint and a quarter of the beer used here. Each runner served as his own comparison, and the trial was double-blind.
After the alcoholic beer, the men covered 4.3% less ground. To put that in terms you can picture, if you usually cover 5K in half an hour, a drop of that size would leave you about 215 meters short when the clock stops.
The researchers also measured running economy by having the men run at a fixed 8 km/h. Economy worsened by 1.1% after the alcoholic beer. In other words, holding the same speed cost a little more oxygen. That offers one plausible explanation for the shorter distance, although a measurement at one steady speed can only tell us so much about what happened once the runners got to set their own pace.
What this means for runners
If I wanted a time trial to tell me whether my training was working, I’d go with the nonalcoholic beer beforehand. A half-lap gap on a standard track is plenty to change how you feel about a 5K fitness test. As for the beer you had with dinner last night, or the one waiting for you after the race, the timing matters. This experiment tested drinking shortly before running.
