GM celebrates a quarter century of big, yellow Hummer cars with a big, yellow Hummer EV

The Hummer name has been back in vogue for a few years at this point, but when you think of the brand, the first vehicle that comes to mind is probably a bright yellow H2 from the early 2000s. Apparently the folks at General Motors know this, which is why to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Hummer nameplate, the automaker introduced a pair of special editions reminiscent of the mega-SUVs of the early 2000s. This is despite the fact that today’s GMC Hummer EV SUV and pickup has little to do with the H2 and H2 SUT of yesteryear.

Maybe it’s because I was a little boy when the original H2 came out, but these silly looking yellow monsters really speak to me. The package is officially called the GMC Hummer EV ICON | It’s called the 25, and you can think whatever you want about the original H2, but there’s no denying that it was iconic. Hell, even the bright yellow color has been officially named “Icon” just to drive that point home, and inside the truck has been fitted with a new jet black interior with serialized badging on the instrument panel, because it is a limited-run model, after all.

GMC says ICON | There will be 25 packages available on 2X and 3X trims of both the pickup and SUV, but I really think you’ll have to go with the SUV if you want the full early 2000s experience. It is set to make its debut at the 2026 ESPY Awards in New York on July 15.

While the original 2003 H2 was powered by a 6.0-liter V8 that produced 316 horsepower, the new Hummer has a bit more power due to its electric drivetrain. According to GMC, it produces an amazing 1,160 hp, enough for a 0 to 60 mph time of 2.8 seconds. Thank God for progress.

Changes for 2027

The new special edition isn’t the only change coming to its Hummer EV siblings for 2027. They are also getting native NACS charging ports, which means they will be able to charge at Tesla Superchargers across the country. While I may not be a huge fan of giving money to Elon Musk, it’s hard to argue that the Supercharger network isn’t more extensive and more reliable than other CCS-based chargers around the country.

GMC is also introducing five new colors for 2027. Along with Icon (bright yellow), there’s also Dark Ridge, Azurite Blue, Dark Amber and Deep Violet matte. There’s no word on whether these colors are going to replace the current offerings or if they’re being added in addition to what’s already available. Taking the customizability further, two new 22-inch wheel offerings have been added.

The goofy Hummer EV party tricks still remain, like four-wheel steering with Crab Walk and King Crab mode, as well as Extract mode that can raise the truck up to six inches to help clear obstacles. WTF mode (Wants to Freedom) is still present, which helps with the bonkers 0-60 times.

I’m sure the folks at GM never dreamed of where the Hummer would end up when they were designing the first H2 in the early 2000s. And when the brand was discontinued after the 2010 model year, those same people probably thought it was dead and gone, but here we are, entering 2027 with the worst, yellow Hummer ever.
