Controversy erupted at MetLife Stadium when United States President Donald Trump ignored the climax of the FIFA World Cup final by pausing on the winners’ podium during Spain’s historic victory over Argentina. As Spain captain Rodri hoisted the coveted Jules Rimet trophy, the 80-year-old president remained visibly present on the stage, commanding the attention of fans and cameras during what should have been a moment reserved for champions.
The incident echoed Trump’s previous headline-grabbing appearance at a FIFA Club World Cup trophy presentation, when he stopped by the celebratory contingent following Chelsea’s victory, also on American soil. True to form, Trump repeated the performance in New Jersey, sitting on the edge of the podium after handing the trophy to Rodri. FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who was sharing the stage with Trump, eventually laughed and pushed the president away and tried to focus on the cheering Spain team.
Trump’s presence at the final was previously announced by Infantino, who last month confirmed that the US president would jointly present the trophy with the FIFA chief. “That’s always been the plan,” Infantino said. “This is how it has always been done in the past – the president of the country where the final takes place, together with the FIFA president, presents the trophy.” Despite this tradition, Trump’s extended appearance drew a mixed reaction from the crowd, with cheers breaking out when his image appeared on the stadium’s large screen.
On the field, Spain won a tight victory over Argentina in an extra-time battle. The decisive moment came in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres, playing for Barcelona, broke the deadlock after a tense and largely uneventful match. Argentina were reduced to 10 players in the final moments of regular time, with Enzo Fernández receiving a second yellow card, costing the South Americans the rest of the match.
Although the match itself may not be remembered as a classic, the chaotic trophy ceremony and Trump’s headline-grabbing antics ensured that the World Cup final ended in dramatic, if unconventional, fashion.
