Setup and breakdown

While I have used many camp and folding chairs in the past, this one tops the list for being the easiest to set up or fold. There are no tricks or special locking mechanisms that you have to push or pull to set it up or break it down. One of the most overlooked features is how easy it is to remove the chair or put it in a carrying case. The large opening makes both hassle-free. I can arrange this chair within seconds after taking it out of the carry bag.

Rating: 9/10

Comfort and ergonomics

While CORE claims it is a padded chair, I have a hard time feeling or seeing it. It doesn’t have much padding, but it is comfortable. My wife and I sat around a bonfire in our Core XL padded tension chairs for many hours during camping trips and family outings. The seat and backrest recline slightly, making it easy to rest, but not so far back that it becomes too difficult for our 1-year-old to jump out to chase.

Rating: 8/10

stability and strength

With a 300 pound weight capacity, I have no worries about this chair breaking during normal use. It’s stable on flat concrete and gravel, but on soft grass (like after a soaking rain), it will sink a bit into the soft ground. However, the feet have a wide surface area, so you won’t go very far. I never felt like I was going to fall off this chair, no matter where I set it up, as long as the ground was reasonably level.

Rating: 9/10

Portability and packability

I have two of these chairs and both fit easily in the back of our SUV. They will also fit in the trunk of most cars, so they are quite compact. But I wouldn’t want to take them backpacking or kayak camping because they aren’t that compact. The carrying case with the shoulder strap makes it easy to carry them short distances, but still, I wouldn’t hike a mile carrying a chair or two.

Rating: 7/10

Durability and build quality

After being loaded up in my vehicles, while camping and outings with the family over the past several months, the Core XL Padded Tension Chair has held up very well and shows few signs of wear. The 600D polyester is strong and won’t tear, the seams won’t fray, and the powder-coated steel frame remains sturdy.

Rating: 8/10

Versatility and Use Cases

I’ve used this chair to hang out around a campfire, watch youth sporting events, and sit at family gatherings. It would also be great for tailgating and relaxing in the yard while the kids play. Keep it in the back of your vehicles or in your RV to ensure you always have a chair nearby if you’re nearby. But it may not make a good backpacking or kayak camping chair because it is too heavy.

Rating: 8/10

price-to-performance

At $60, the Core XL Padded Tension Chair is a great value. It’s nowhere near the most expensive camp chair I’ve ever owned, but it’s comparable in comfort and durability. It’s light enough that it can be taken to most events without taking too much of a workout, so you don’t have to stop, set it up, and take a nap before heading to the event. It’s even better quality than cheaper chairs I have, so I think it’s a great value for money.

Rating: 8/10

Overall Rating: Core XL Padded Tension Chair Review

If I don’t already have two, I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase another one for our other upcoming family adventures.
