Brandon Curry has a reputation for performing functional workouts that bring Olympia-winning results, so when the big man saw some recent comments on social media regarding narrow grip lat pulldowns, he immediately set the record straight.
Curry says he raised eyebrows recently when he read negative comments under a video of fellow bodybuilder Victor Martinez. Apparently, the “Dominican Dominator” was criticized for bending his arms while performing narrow grip lat pulldowns. Curry then became angry at what he saw on social media and posted his own video, explaining that direct weapons should be avoided for maximum results.
“I realize that a lot of people look at (Martinez) and say he’s doing it wrong. Well, I think he’s doing it right,” said the 2019 Mr. Olympia champion.
Brandon Curry’s lat pulldown technique to increase lat activation
Narrow Grip Lat Pulldown It can be performed while sitting at a cable station to isolate the upper body, and it is an exercise designed to add thickness to the back. When you work with a wide grip, lat pulldowns create a winged appearance by elongating the lats, but if you want to add mass to the middle of your back, a narrow grip is suitable for you.
start with bent elbows
Curry, concerned that unsuspecting social media commentators were proposing the straight start, decided to demonstrate the move for himself. “I think one of the most effective ways is you can start with bent elbows,” the big man explained, resisting the urge to bend his elbows out to the side. Curry raised his shoulders but kept his arms slightly bent. “Let the lats expand, then pull down,” he trained. “But never let those arms fully extend. Just lift the shoulders up and let the waist extend… now that’s a lat pulldown.”
Focus on the scapula, not range of motion
Currie concluded that starting with a bent elbow took out some of the arm flexibility that would be needed at the top of the pull. Instead, he focused on raising and lowering his scapula. “Weapons are beside the point,” he told his more than 1 million Instagram followers. “You’re trying to train your back, not your arms. So, let your back go through the range of motion, and don’t worry about the range of motion of your arms. That’s a tip for you.”
After making his point well, Curry had one final word for the “experts” on social media. “Whenever you think someone is doing something wrong, you might not know what they’re actually doing right.”
