Bill Grant, the bodybuilding icon known to millions as the “Man of Steel”, has died at the age of 79, with tributes pouring in to remember the legend.
Achieving success during the golden age of bodybuilding, Grant’s ambition to build muscle started at age 9He was taken to training in his bedroom and a friend’s backyard. However, the bright lights beckoned and Grant entered his first serious competition in his mid-twenties, finishing a respectable sixth place at the Mister USA event. Through trial and error, Grant made steady progress thanks to his passion for building his physique and won first place in the 1972 Mr. World contest. This top finish would be the beginning of a great story that would see Grant repeat his success at Mister World, Mister International and win countless other trophies in the US and Europe over more than two decades.
Grant’s friend and fellow bodybuilder, Shawn Ray, shared his loss on Instagram following the news on June 3, 2026. “Today is the sad news that the legend Bill Grant has passed away,” the multi-time Mr. Olympia contestant said. “Bill was born on September 27, 1946. Bill was 79 years old. Condolences to his family and friends.”
The exact cause of death was not revealed till the time of writing the news.
