Arsenal have set their sights on a high-profile defensive shake-up, targeting England internationals John Stones and Ezri Konsa to strengthen their back line following the injury to William Saliba. The Gunners are actively seeking reinforcements at centre-back after Saliba faced a long absence due to a back injury suffered during France’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain. Although surgery has been postponed, the 25-year-old is now entering an extended period of rehabilitation, forcing Arsenal to turn to the summer transfer market urgently.
The North London club’s interest in the John Stones is particularly surprising. Following the expiry of his contract with Manchester City last month, Stones is now a free agent and is also attracting the attention of Chelsea. At 32, Stones brings an impressive pedigree, having captured 17 major trophies during a glorious decade at the Etihad – including six Premier League titles. The defender’s connection to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who worked closely with him during his tenure as Pep Guardiola’s assistant, adds another layer of intrigue to the potential move.
Arteta has not hidden his admiration for Stones, previously saying, “John is a player I really like. I followed him before we signed him when I was at City. I worked with him for many years. I know him well and when I look at a centre-back, he has a lot of characteristics that I like.” Stones’ availability on a free transfer and his proven fitness at the World Cup, where he made five appearances for England, make him an attractive short-term solution to Arsenal’s defensive crisis. However, his susceptibility to injuries remains a significant concern – Stones only featured for 439 Premier League minutes last season, has suffered from thigh, calf and muscle problems, and has struggled for consistent regular minutes over the past decade.
Arsenal are also eyeing Ezri Konsa, who at 28 offers a contrasting profile. After partnering Stones for England at the World Cup, Konsa is under contract for two more years at Aston Villa, and his consistent fitness record is impressive – he has started at least 33 Premier League matches in each of the last five seasons and has no notable injury history. Nevertheless, negotiations for Konsa are complicated due to the significant difference in valuation between Arsenal and Villa.
Both Stones and Konsa are versatile enough to operate at right-back, further increasing their appeal. Meanwhile, Arsenal have strengthened their defensive ranks with the permanent signing of Piero Hincapie following a loan from Bayer Leverkusen, adding Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori, Cristian Mosquera, Jurien Timber and Ben White as centre-back options. White has resumed training after a knee injury, and Timbers is optimistic about an imminent return as he recovers from a groin problem.
While the pursuit of Stones and Konsa dominates Arsenal’s transfer agenda, the club face tough talks and vital fitness assessments as they look to strengthen their defense ahead of the new campaign.
