Welcome back to Retail Therapist. There are many modalities when it comes to counseling – one being shop therapy. In each session, GQ’s Gerald Ortiz answers fashion-conscious people’s real shopping puzzles.
decisions decisions. In our last session, we discussed kooky loafers, and now that summer is here, it only makes sense that you’re thinking about expanding your fashion toolbox to the season’s favorite shoe: the flip-flop. We have to do everything we can to stay cool, and I applaud you for opening your third eye and seeing beyond the linen shirt or short shorts. You’re moving in the right direction, and as you duly noted, it seems as if every stylish person is wearing flip-flops at the moment. I honestly think there’s no shame in buying a simple pair of Havaianas for twenty bucks, think of them like Converse Chuck Taylors – everyone has a pair because they’re a classic. In fact, if you’re on the fence about a trend, snagging a cheaper pair is probably a safer bet.
I know some lost souls who have been attracted to the flip-flop siren song and are spending over $500 for a pair of luxury sandals. Can you imagine? Spend so much for less shoes? And shoes you don’t even really like?
Again, no judgment here. You’ll have to do some internal searching to figure out whether your love for flip-flops is yours, or whether you’re just being influenced by the flood of flip-flop imagery flooding your Insta feed. If it’s the former, you have my full support in dealing with Auraly Tsinelas. But if you’re looking for some fashion fulfillment in the summer shoe department and want to veer off the well-worn flip-flop path, I have all the confidence in the world that you’ll land on a great pair of sandals that will suit your personal tastes. Just remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. You’re taking a step toward a more meaningful understanding of style. Of course, this is just one step among many.
