At this point it has been a very common discussion for years and years that new trucks are too complex, and as a result, too expensive. Take today’s crop of midsize trucks, where you can easily find yourself in the $60,000+ club at the top end of the trim stack. Even when you try to go for a “basic” truck, prices move north year after year as automakers add more standard equipment to your entry-level trims while pretending that’s what customers want. But what if you clearly No Do you want a bigger screen, power windows or even power locks? Well, something like the 1996 Land Rover Defender 130 300Tdi might be the best choice for you.
Why? Because even 30 years ago, this truck represented a shamelessly back-to-basics approach. After all this was the whole styling of the old Defender, what with its direct lineage Original Land Rover series. You still get the roomy practicality of a nearly 17-foot truck with a six-foot-long bed, and you get relatively little torque—if painful Slower – 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel with 111 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.
You know what you don’t get? No power steering, no manual door locks and windows, and to the delight of techno-skeptics far and wide, no screen to speak of… not even a digital clock. You also don’t get airbags, so this is about as basic as they come, while still offering real and robust capability.
To that end, you still get a locking center differential, low-range transfer case, and four-wheel discs (so it’s a thing). Little More advanced than you expect). Our particular example also packs a set of LED headlights and a cabin heater, while the 16-inch five-spoke alloy wheels get a set of BFGoodrich KO2 tyres.
Overall, if you want a truck that is as analog as possible, something like the Defender 130 Pickup is probably your best option.
