Slavko Vincic makes history as referee for 2026 World Cup finals: Contrasting records with Spain and Argentina add intrigue
Slavko Vincic will take the lead role as referee for the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, a crowning achievement in his officiating career. The Slovenian official, renowned for his extensive experience in European and World Cup fixtures, openly expressed his surprise and pride at receiving FIFA’s call to manage the biggest match of the tournament.
In a video message released by FIFA, Vinčić described the moment he was informed of his appointment: “So, first of all, a shock. Then joy. I was trembling, so to reach a World Cup final is an incredible honor. It’s something that… for a referee, for a young referee it’s only a dream when they start. So, I’m very proud, very proud of myself, of my team. Very difficult to put everything into words. But I’m very proud to represent my country.” Slovenia, at the biggest sporting event in the world, so, yes, I am very proud and we will do our best.
Vincic’s track record in matches involving this year’s finalists offers a layer of intrigue as the world awaits the outcome. Spain’s record under Vincic has been impeccable and they have never faced defeat in the four matches played under the Slovenian player. Argentina’s only encounter with Vincic, on the other hand, proved historic – he was the referee when the Albiceleste lost 3-2 to Saudi Arabia in their opening match of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Despite that shocking defeat, Argentina ultimately won the tournament, winning the trophy with a dramatic turnaround.
Vincic has already been seen in action, overseeing Brazil vs Morocco and Algeria vs Jordan during the group stage at this year’s tournament. Notably, he also scored in Mexico’s 2–0 win over Ecuador in the Round of 32, a match in which Piero Hincapie received a red card for communicating with an opponent while covering his mouth.
As Vincic prepares for the most prestigious assignment of his career, the football world will have a close eye on him – not only for his performances on the field but also for the remarkable storyline his presence will bring to the final between Spain and Argentina. The two finalists with their contrasting records add an additional dimension to a contest already filled with anticipation.
