Readers, I’m coming to you live from the back of the Rivian R1s – the same R1s where I slept at a campsite near a rock climbing ridge in Massachusetts last weekend. I’m using camp mode now to keep the interior nice as I listen to the rain and write this blog, just as I used it to create the best experience ever sleeping in my car on Friday night. But the existence of the best car to sleep in means that the opposite must also be true, and today I ask: What’s the worst car you’ve ever slept in?
We’re going to take a broad definition of “sleep” for this one, ranging from overnight camping sites to napping while sitting in a parent’s running car. The only real criteria is that you’re sleeping at some point in the process, and the car you’re sleeping in is absolutely terrifying. Just a frightening experience, preferably for everyone involved.
My worst sleeping car was my FR-S
The Rivian’s interior is cavernous, comfortable, and climate-controlled, and my old Scion FR-S was the opposite in every way. The front seats were more focused on handling the Gs than the Zs, and while an adult could theoretically fit at a diagonal in the back (by folding the rear seats down), it’s even less comfortable. Plus, there’s no way to keep the heat out on a sunny day, so you’ll wake up drenched in sweat when the internal temperature hits “bad for kids.”
My worst car to sleep in is my old Scion FR-S, but what’s yours? Did you spend the weekend camping out in the back of an Impreza sedan, or did you somehow manage to take a nap in the back of a Model Y rideshare? Leave your answers in the comments below, and I’ll collect your favorite answers at the end of the week. Bonus points for real, true stories.
