| Update:

key takeaways:

  • Volvo Group said the product refresh of the Mack Trucks is on track to be completed in 2027, following recent updates to its on-highway and vocational portfolio.
  • Volvo executives said Anthem repositioned the Mac to compete in Pioneer and longhaul, where it has a 1.6% share through 2025.
  • Mack plans to open a keystone order in the end of the third quarter and a new granite order in the second half of 2026.

Volvo Group said the ongoing product renewal of Mack trucks is moving toward completion in 2027, pointing to recent updates to the brand’s on-highway and commercial portfolio as part of a broader effort to increase market share.

The refresh includes the launch of Pioneer as Mack’s latest flagship Class 8 on-highway tractor in April 2025, as well as updates to other on-highway and commercial models such as the new Keystone model and a revised Granite.

And in presentations during Volvo Group’s 2026 Capital Markets Day, Volvo Trucks president Roger Elam and head of North American truck operations Stephen Roy expressed confidence that the overhaul is delivering the expected benefits of the company’s investment in the brand.

Presentations at the event in Eskilstuna, Sweden, from Roger Elam, president of Volvo Trucks, and Stefan Roy, head of North American truck operations, reflected confidence that the overhaul is delivering the expected benefits of the company’s investment in the brand.

“Our core business is going in the right direction, but it is the longhaul segment that represents 43% of the heavy-duty industry in the US and Canadian market, and we have not yet tapped into it,” Roy said. “The good news with the launch of our Pioneer last year and our brand new Anthem is that we now have the trucks to do this.”

According to Volvo Group, Mack’s North American market share by segment in 2025:

  • Professional: 13.7%
  • Regional freight: 11%
  • Longhaul: 1.6%

Mack and its parent company hope that the Pioneer – with a more aerodynamic shape than the old Anthem before its own revamp – will help revive their fortunes in the longhaul segment of the truck market.

The longhaul, on-highway part of the North American truck market is what Volvo Group CEO Martin Lundstedt called “a really, almost absent type of segment for Macs” in 2025.

“We need more customers to gain market share. We can’t make it with the customers we have,” Elm told analysts and investors at Volvo Construction Equipment’s headquarters in Eskilstuna.

And that seems to have been the case. The company said about 45% of Pioneer’s sales and orders came from new customers rather than existing customers.

“To me, it’s a really good sign that we’re going to hit it out of the park with our Pioneer and our Anthem,” Roy said.

Mac’s ambitions for the Pioneer and other new or revised models will be supported by the launch of a new 1.7 million-square-foot, $700 million manufacturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico.

The Monterey plant will build trucks for both Mack and sister company Volvo Trucks North America. VTNA president Peter Voorhoeve told Transport Topics in March that production lines at the plant were expected to start rolling in July.

VTNA’s share of the Monterrey plant’s output will be exported to the US and Canada. Mac’s share will supply the Mexican and Latin American markets.

According to the presentation, the expansion will also support Mac’s plans to double its export business in Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

Volvo Group said the Mac will focus on three key markets: Mexico, Chile and Colombia.

“These are really good, mature markets where you have strong fleets that are investing heavily in new technologies, sustainable technologies,” Roy told analysts and investors attending the 2026 Capital Markets Day.

Roy, who will be replaced by Wilson Lierman in August, said: “This is an area that we’re really excited to return to. We used to have a very strong presence when it comes to the export market. We’ve selected about 18 countries that we’re really focusing on.”

Along with those plans, Volvo Group has ambitions to win 25% share of the North American heavy-duty truck market by 2030, which the parent company revealed at its last capital markets day in Dublin, Virginia, in November 2024. VTNA is expected to contribute 15% of the total and MAC is expected to contribute 10%.

According to Omdia Automotive, VTNA will achieve a 9.1% share of US Class 8 retail sales in 2025, while the Mac will have an 8.7% share.

Roy said momentum built as 2025 progressed, telling analysts and investors: “If you look at the last half of the year, we ended at 9.3% market share… We see good momentum for market share (into 2026).”

Additionally, the order book for Keystone will open at the end of Q3 2026. It replaces the Pinnacle model in Mac’s business lineup. The Pinnacle was introduced in 2006, replacing the Vision. The order book for modified granite will open in the second half of 2026.
