Thomas Tuchel faces possible FIFA sanctions after sharp attack on World Cup referee

Thomas Tuchel’s furious outburst against officiating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has thrust the England manager into the spotlight, with global football’s governing body now preparing to take possible disciplinary action after the tournament is over. FIFA is reportedly drawing up a plan to crack down on public criticism of referees, with an investigation into Tuchel’s comments following England’s dramatic 3-2 win over Mexico in the round of 16.

Controversy erupted after Jerel Kwansa was shown a straight red card during the high-stakes encounter, a decision which angered Tuchel in post-match comments. The England head coach also did not hold back and sharply criticized the performance of referee Alireza Faghani. “It’s not good enough. He (the referee) can send any team off at any time,” Tuchel said. “It’s not good enough. It’s just irregular, it’s unbelievable in matches. Now, we have two quarters of the officials yelling at you if you step one foot out of the coaching area. It’s not good at all.”

Sources within the football world have confirmed that FIFA is considering penalties for such open dissent, opting to wait until after the World Cup for any sanctions. According to the report, the severity of any punishment will depend on the official referee report and additional contributing factors. This measured approach contrasts with the Premier League’s immediate reactions to similar incidents, where fines and touchline bans are routinely imposed on outspoken managers.

Tuchel’s frustration was further compounded by England’s persistent problems at right-back throughout the tournament. Injuries to Reece James and Jade Spence, as well as the absence of Tino Livramiento, who withdrew early for surgery, have depleted England’s defensive options. With Konsa now suspended, Tuchel was forced to reshuffle his lineup for England’s 2–1 win over Norway, pairing John Stones with Marc Guhi in the center and deploying Ezri Konsa on the right.

The situation has reignited debate among fans over disciplinary consistency, with Kwansah citing Folarin Balogun’s delayed suspension at the start of the tournament compared to Kwansah’s immediate ban. With Quansah sidelined until at least the final, if England progress, Tuchel’s tactical adaptability will be tested as the Three Lions chase World Cup glory.

FIFA’s impending decision on Tuchel’s fate adds another layer of intrigue to an already dramatic tournament, and the football world awaits the governing body’s final decision on one of the game’s most outspoken managers.
