The quirky Honda Element is reportedly returning
  • A new report alleges that Honda will launch a new Element.
  • Honda will reportedly begin production of the SUV in Ohio in 2029.
  • The first generation Honda Element was in production from 2003 to 2011 and had several unique features.

The success of the refreshed Passport has apparently made Honda think that boxy SUVs are back in style. A new report alleges that the Japanese automaker will be reviving a niche model that lasted just one generation – the Honda Element.

“People with knowledge of the plan” have said automotive news Honda will begin production of the second-generation Element in 2029, specifically in the second quarter. This means that the new SUV will likely go on sale as a 2030 model.

The report says Honda plans to produce the new Element in Ohio, which will serve as the global production hub for the model. It will reportedly slot between the HR-V and CR-V in the lineup. The automaker is expected to produce around 100,000 SUVs.

Honda produced the first generation Element from 2003 to 2011. It was not the commercial success the automaker had hoped for, but it has become a cult classic for its innovative features and design and has gained a large following.

The Element stands out with its pillarless design and rear-mounted suicide doors. This made the SUV incredibly utilitarian, with rubberized floors, a split tailgate, and reclining seats that could fold completely flat to create a sleeping area.

Motor1’s Opinion: The Honda Element offers an experience that was ahead of its time, packed with features that many customers would pay good money for today. We expect Honda to revive this unique SUV, retaining many of the same features and design choices. This will really make it stand out from other boxy compact crossovers.
