From the moment my son was born, I couldn’t wait to take him fishing for the first time. Unlike my own fishing where there is a limit or PB goal, for our first outing I just wanted him to have fun. Well, I also wanted to avoid wasting all that time dealing with complications.

We picked up some worms from the garden and headed to a local pond. The bluegills were surprisingly reluctant that day, but we eventually found one to eat and escaped the bird’s nest in the process.

That successful day, and many others, is thanks to the rod and reel combo I purchased – Kid Caster Spincast Combo. This is a wand that is designed to reduce headaches with a unique design and durable construction. Here’s what I like about it and some cons to consider before buying it.

What I like about the Kid Caster Spincast Combo

it doesn’t get tangled

The specialty of this rod’s design is that it has no guide. Therefore it can be stepped on and pulled without any damage or entanglement. The line flows from the reel, through the inside of the hollow rod, and out of the end. You have fewer lines exposed and therefore less lines trapped.

it is easy to use

The combo comes with a fake lure and bobber. The fake lure is ideal for teaching a child to use a spincast reel. My son was a little over 2 years old when we went to Bass Pro to pick up this rod, and he was casting the lure straight to the bottom and picking it back up the same day.

it is durable

The Kid Caster Rod has been serving as a toy and a piece of fishing gear around the house for the past three months. It has been dragged across the aisle, dropped on the deck, stepped on and generally abused by my child. I’m still using the line it came with and the rod is holding up wonderfully.

Casting and Sensitivity

If you are accustomed to dropping a jig inside a five gallon bucket from 60 feet, you will be extremely disappointed with the accuracy of this rod. This rod is not precise because it is short and does not bend or load when you insert it. Don’t expect too much in terms of distance. But, after a few missteps an adult can cast the bait in the right general direction. The rod does not have much sensitivity, hence it is difficult to mold it. That’s why I will fish exclusively with this rod with bait and bobber. It is also best for fishing from a dock or boat due to casting distance limitations.

threading line through rod

Although this rod keeps it from getting tangled, you will have a headache on your hands if the end of the line slips into the rod. The process of threading the line back through the tip of the rod is not straightforward, but the necessary tools are cleverly hidden within. The hook keeper opens and you’ll find the weight inside there. You will need to attach the line to one of those weights and slide it down the rod and then out of the tip.

final thoughts

The strongest feature of the Kid Caster is that it maximizes fun and minimizes headaches. It is best suited for a child who is getting their first rod and who is fishing from a dock or boat.
