“I definitely think there’s a more playful energy coming into men’s clothing,” says McCain. “Brands like Aurelie, Prada, Versace and Celine are bringing in amazing colors like deep purple, yellow and teal and it feels like a time where you can really express style through these unexpected combinations. Feels 80s but modern at the same time.

Luna says he has appreciated the emergence of burgundy in “airy shirting” from Aurélie and “more mechanical interpretations” from PAF. “I think it’s extremely easy to incorporate burgundy and spicy reds,” he says. “A simple weave can go a long way.”

how to wear more colors

Whether you’re starting out with a wardrobe full of black or already have a panoply of color, there’s always a new shade worth trying. An easy and budget-conscious way to add more color is to choose a bright piece you really like and fit it into your look. “The last thing you want is to jump from one trend to another, or redo your entire wardrobe based on the color of the season,” says Roethel.

Accessories may be the safest point of entry, according to McCain, but a colorful vintage tee or button-down also serves as a solid starting point. “Instead of letting color surround the look, let it be the unexpected element,” she says.

On the other hand, if you’re ready to jump head first, there are ways to do that too. As Roethel points out, monochromatic looks make people who wear them look effortlessly put together. Or you can go full maximalist.

“If that’s your thing, feel free to get involved,” says DeLeon. “There are ways to wear royal blue and bright yellow together that won’t make you look like a Minion. Case in point? Ralph Lauren’s classic Cortlandt fireman jacket that just walked down the runway in Milan looks far more cute than hideous.”
