Have you ever heard of bunions? Me, I love learning about history, but still, this was new to me. If you’re in the same boat, here’s what they have on the website Medievalbritain.com means As a “medieval area-negation weapon”, and this is because of two things.
For one thing, no matter how you throw them, there will always be at least one sharp spike pointing up. And secondly, no matter which unfortunate creature or vehicle steps on or rolls over the raised, sharp spikes, they are sure to have a very bad time.
Add those two things together, and whoever you put out of that area right now has been rejected.
Why am I telling you about these in June 2026? That’s handy, if unfortunate: Because earlier this week, a mountain biker near Courtenay, British Columbia, Canada (which is on Vancouver Island, BTW) had the misfortune of finding one of several. The first was his bike tyre, which was obviously pretty well punctured as a result of rolling over one of these pointy things.
Local mountain biker Eric Roy has lived in the area for more than 14 years, and told local news station CHEK News about the incidentWhich you can see in the video given above. Mountain bikers aren’t the only ones who use the trails in the area; Dirt bikers, dogs, hikers and others all enjoy recreation in these areas on a regular basis, especially when the weather gets nicer and more inviting to spend time outside.
Comox Valley Search and Rescue, which serves the area, reports received From several trail users about finding these nasty little booby traps on trails in the area. The organization then published a photo and a warning on its social media channels, advising trail users to keep an eye out for these potentially dangerous and easily overlooked devices when they are enjoying nature. The Comox Valley Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are also reportedly investigating.
Geography and tactics may vary, but unfortunately, this is the latest in a series of dangerous booby traps being set up for trail users by unknown individuals. Could this be a joke gone wrong? Sure, if you think putting a nail in someone’s foot is the height of a prank.
Please remain alert when you are outside, no matter what you are doing while you are outside. This is especially true if you’re in the area discussed here, but it seems like extra caution can easily be applied to any trail these days.
