While Ryan Fox captured his first major championship at The Open on Sunday, the controversy surrounding Bryson DeChambeau dominated the conversation.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler makes controversial statement after finishing tied for fourth at 7-under par two-stroke penalty DeChambeau received during Friday’s round, when the two were paired together.
Scheffler’s comments came a day after he declined to discuss the situation after Saturday’s round.
“All I can really say is I think maybe we need to be a little more strict with the way we’re policing people, but it’s a little bit of a balance because you have some guys like Bryson who will have every shot they take being televised.” Scheffler said. “When you have camera angles that are too far away, things can look different than when you’re there.”
Scheffler made it clear that DeChambeau is “definitely not a rookie.”
“I would just say this to Bryson, I’ve known him a long time, and there’s a lot of him, but he’s definitely not a cheater. I’ve never seen him cheat, whether we’re having a putting contest on the putting green, a chipping contest, or when we’re playing amateur golf. I’ve never seen anything suspicious.
“I think we need to get back into the traditions of the game, and maybe we need to control things a little more strictly. But like I said, it’s a tough line to cross. Bryson is a guy I’ve known for a really long time. Like I said, he’s not a cheater.”
Scotty Scheffler elaborated on Friday’s Bryson DeChambeau Rules incident and echoed Harris English’s comments about Bryson always being on TV and the camera angles being different from what’s happening:

The result of the fine created even more controversy as DeChambeau threatened to withdraw, causing a delay in the release of weekend tee times, which Players raised the issue with.
However, he ultimately decided to play and finished tied for 14th at 4-under.
