Whether you’re packing for a weekend trip or a global adventure, there’s no doubt about the benefits of a lighter load. Lifting less weight feels good, feels liberating, feels right. But this doesn’t just mean counting ounces. Even a superlight product is heavier than not taking that gear at all. That’s why it’s worth focusing on bringing the items you need into the woods and nothing more. With less weight and less luggage, it’s easier to maintain energy and stamina for extra miles, extra peaks, extra fun.

“I think a lot of people prepare for big, long adventures by packing out of fear — fear of being uncomfortable or missing something,” says Angela Liguoria professional photographer and Fjällräven Ambassador who traveled the world in search of great adventures. “But carrying less gives you more energy, more freedom to move faster and go further, and also have more fun, especially when you’re out for multiple days.”

Liguori should know. He just completed the 40-mile Huemul Circuit through the backcountry of Patagonia. This is an adventurous off-trail route that requires crossing glaciers and several zip-line crossings of rivers. And Liguori had everything necessary for the journey.

“Every pound counts, and it all adds up,” Liguori says. He said he has a simple process for removing gear before a trip. She asks herself two questions:

❓What is the purpose of this piece of gear? If it’s not an essential purpose, or if the gear isn’t versatile enough to serve more than one purpose, Liguori seriously considers this before packing it.

❓How often will I use it? If it’s going to be of limited use, you probably don’t need it at all. “Start simple and trust your ability to adapt,” says Liguori.
