Morocco's Azzedine Onahi makes historic World Cup quarter-final breakthrough

Morocco stunned the football world and gave an ominous warning to their rivals, becoming the first team to punch their ticket to the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals by defeating co-hosts Canada 3-0.

The showdown took place in front of a huge crowd, with Morocco surprisingly extending their unbeaten streak to ten matches and progressing to the last eight. Buoyed by the home support but burdened by expectations, Canada suffered defeat in front of their own fans – an unprecedented humiliation as they became the first co-hosts to be eliminated from the tournament. Azzedine Onahi was undoubtedly the hero, netting twice in a second-half masterclass, while Soufiane Rahimi turned the knife on him with a late third, sealing a night that will be celebrated for years in Rabat and mourned in Montreal.

The initial exchange was anything but predictable. Despite Canada’s underdog status, he launched himself in Morocco hungry for quick success. Tani Oluwaseyi could have rewritten the narrative within a quarter of an hour, but the ever-alert Yassin Bounou smothered his gilt-edged chance. Alistair Johnston also threatened with a header from close range, but the Moroccan defenders put themselves in the way, denying any glimmer of hope for the hosts. The first half was full of tension, with neither side able to gain a decisive lead, but each missed Canadian chance felt like a ticking time bomb.

Whatever Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahabi said at halftime worked like pure magic. The Atlas Lions came roaring out of the tunnel and within five minutes the standoff was broken. Achraf Hakimi’s clever free-kick picked out Onahi who was hiding on the edge of the box. One touch, one shot-bottom corner. Canada’s past mistakes now seemed fatal. The hosts’ attack faded, their last meaningful shot on target already a distant memory as the second half passed. Even when Canadian manager Jesse Marsh rolled the dice with tactical changes, Morocco handled the pressure with composure.

Frustration grew in the Canadian ranks. Jonathan David missed a free-kick from an interesting area, leaving it harmless. Moments later, Tajon Buchanan launched a ferocious drive, forcing Bounu to make a sharp save, but the Moroccan wall remained unbroken. Then came the final, devastating blow. A sharp counter saw Brahim Diaz break into Canada’s left flank, then unselfishly slide the ball through to Onahi. The midfielder made no mistake, firing past the helpless goalkeeper and doubling the lead, dashing Canada’s hopes.

The exclamation point of the night came in intermission. As Canada pushed the bodies forward, Soufiane Rahimi scored the coup, completing a clever move with the last kick of the match. The 3–0 scoreline did not disappoint Morocco – it underlined their authority and growing threat in knockout football. Seven wins in their last nine tournament knockout outings now mark them as genuine title contenders.

After the match, Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahabi revealed, “We knew we had to be patient and strike when we needed to. These players have the heart and hunger to go to every level.” Meanwhile, Canada’s Jesse Marsh reflected on the bitter exit: “It’s a tough pill to swallow. We made history by getting out of the group, but tonight was not our night.”

Morocco’s strong statement has sent shockwaves through their rivals as the tournament reaches its most crucial stage. His blend of tactical discipline, clinical finishing and sheer self-belief makes him a nightmare for any left winger. For Canada, the dream ends tragically, but their success until the knockouts will inspire a new generation. As the dust settles, one thing is clear: Morocco’s World Cup journey is far from over, and the world is finally paying attention.
