Round Five – Laguna Seca
talent cup
Kensei Matsudaira turned his home round into a championship-changing Talent Cup double at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, while Australians Jake Paige and Sam Draine both claimed podium finishes in each race.
Matsudaira arrived in California 14 points behind Nathan Gouker, but walked away with a 23-point advantage, knocking Gouker off Saturday’s lead and falling to fourth place on Sunday.
Both Australians were consistently part of the leading group. Paige finished second and third, while Drain recorded a reverse 3–2 scorecard, solidifying third and fourth in the championship standings.
Gauker recovers from accident to take pole
Nathan Gouker set the early pace despite suffering from a large high-side during Friday qualifying. His Quarterly Racing crew repaired the bike in time for a late comeback, allowing Gouker to set a provisional Talent Cup lap record of 1m36.043.
He improved again in Q2 and recorded a 1m35.954 to secure pole. Australian Jake Paige finished second for Team Hammer with a 1m36.086, while Matsudaira completed the front row for Team Roberts.
Sam Drain also took the lead in the race on his Yamaha BLU CRU Estenson Racing entry.
Final-lap Gauker crashes and Matsudaira loses race one
Page made a great start from outside the front row and took the lead from the early corners. Matsudaira took the lead on lap two, with Gouker and Draine completing the four-rider breakaway.
The leading quartet changed the order repeatedly as each rider tried to balance outright aggression against the importance of maintaining pace around Laguna Seca.
Gaukar moved to the front for about half the distance and remained a central part of the battle for victory. Matsudaira regained the lead, with Gaukkar moving ahead again before the white flag approached.
The championship leader’s race ended at turn six on the final lap when he crashed heavily while leading. This incident raised red flags and Gaukar was not classified.
Matsudaira took the win, with Paige finishing second, only 0.444 seconds behind. Drain finished in the top three among all teens and was just 0.598 seconds off the win, leaving just 0.154 seconds between the two Australians.
Sawyer Lafayette finished fourth ahead of Derek Sanchez and Reese Frankenfield.
The result changed the championship. Matsudaira went from 14 points behind Gaukar to 11 points ahead in the same race.

Talent Cup Race 2
Matsudaira and crew overcome engine failure to complete the double
Matsudaira’s Sunday race unraveled almost before it started. His engine failed after only two laps of the morning warmup, leaving the Team Roberts crew facing a full replacement before the afternoon start.
Matsudaira worked with the team, retrieving parts and helping with hasty turnarounds. When the pit lane opened about five hours later, the repaired machine was ready.
Paige retook the lead, although both Matsudaira and Gouker had moved ahead before the opening lap was completed. Sanchez joined Paige and Draine in the starting five-rider group, but a mechanical failure ended his race on lap two.
Gauker took the lead on lap three before Matsudaira could respond. Paige then led the fifth and sixth laps, showing that both Australians had the pace to win rather than follow the championship contenders.
Matsudaira returned to the front on lap seven and remained there, while Gauker began to lose contact with the leading trio during the closing four laps.
Drain applied pressure in the final sector, but Matsudaira held his ground and won by 0.695 seconds. Paige was only 0.064 seconds behind Drain in third, giving the Australians another double podium.
Gauker finished fourth, 6.355 seconds off the winner, with Lafayette and Frankenfield completing the top six.
