Spain’s world champions and Chelsea stars surprised by Donald Trump’s unexpected appearance at the trophy ceremony
Spain’s World Cup celebrations were overshadowed by an extraordinary episode involving former US President Donald Trump, whose controversial appearance on stage upset players and staff during the trophy presentation. Mark Cucurella, Spain’s standout left-back and recent signing from Real Madrid, didn’t mince words when he revealed how disturbing Trump’s involvement was, admitting he was “not scared f***ing less” as the American politician awkwardly sat next to the team.
After a defensively flawless campaign – Cucurella and his teammates conceded only one goal en route to a dominant victory over Argentina in the final – Spain’s moment of glory was unexpectedly interrupted. The trophy presentation, already delayed by an elaborate closing show and an extended half-time performance, became the stage for a surreal encounter. Trump played a key role, personally presenting medals to both Spain and Argentina before presenting the World Cup trophy to Spain captain Rodri. However, rather than step away from the spotlight, Trump remained on the podium, standing directly next to the coveted trophy as it was raised, drawing shocked gazes and obvious discomfort from the newly crowned champions.
The incident was immediately compared to the 2025 Club World Cup final, where a similar scene played out after the match. Last summer, at MetLife Stadium – which was temporarily renamed New York/New Jersey Stadium for the World Cup – Chelsea recorded an impressive 3–0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain with two goals from Cole Palmer and the decisive goal from Joao Pedro. However, the ceremony was again interrupted when Trump inserted himself into the trophy ceremony. Players including Cole Palmer and Mark Cucurella were clearly stunned as Trump handed out medals and stayed on stage, defying established protocol.
Cucurella later described the bizarre scenario: “We were told that, as a rule, Donald Trump would come to give us the trophy and we couldn’t pick it up until he left. We were all there waiting for him to leave – but the guy didn’t want to go – and besides, we looked at him and he said, ‘Pick it up, I’ll be right here’, and so on. I wondered who would say anything to him, you know… I was scared shit.” The Spanish defender’s candid admission underlined the awkwardness that pervaded both the Club World Cup and World Cup celebrations.
During Spain’s second world title ceremony, event organizers eventually intervened, and directed Trump to the side of the stage. FIFA president Gianni Infantino was even forced to run onto the stage to redirect the former president, although Trump was still clearly present as Rodri hoisted the trophy.
The spectacle of a high-profile political figure disrupting football’s most sacred moment has sparked debate across the sporting world, with many now questioning the effect of such a showdown on the sanctity of players’ celebrations and the game’s greatest achievements.
