Tears and turmoil: Scaloni breaks down as Spain shatters Argentina’s World Cup dream – hails Messi as the greatest ever
Lionel Scaloni cut an emotional figure at MetLife Stadium as Argentina’s World Cup hopes were dashed by a 1-0 defeat to Spain on Sunday. The Argentina boss, clearly emotional, facing the press in East Rutherford and struggling to hold back his tears, gave a raw and heartfelt assessment of his team’s journey and the uncertain future that now lies ahead.
Spain’s narrow victory came after a tough match in which Argentina had to deal with a growing injury crisis in the defensive line. Scaloni revealed that he was forced to substitute three of his four defenders, a situation which made the challenge against Spain even more difficult. “We suffered a lot of setbacks that we didn’t expect due to injuries at key positions,” Scaloni said. “It’s not an excuse, but it took (even) hard work for our players to get here in the best possible way. When you’re facing a team like Spain, if you’re not fully fit, you can suffer.”
The match took another dramatic turn when Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, giving Argentina a numerical disadvantage. Scaloni questioned the umpiring of Fernandez’s first booking, saying, “The first yellow card could have been avoided by the referee but it is the way it is. He was not thinking of booking him with a second yellow card.”
Despite the adversity, Scaloni praised the resilience and determination shown by his team, insisting, “It was a dream for everyone to play and we tried until the last moment. The staff, the players and I. I believe it is fair that I can take this time out for myself to think (things). This place is amazing. It is a dream place. Never in my life would I have imagined – please bear with me – that including my staff. – that we would be in this situation.” Place. So to continue you need a lot of things: resetting your mind and regrouping which is very difficult to rebuild and it’s really very painful.
The Argentina manager also spoke about Lionel Messi’s future and clarified that he has not spoken to the legendary forward about his plans. Scaloni minced no words in praising Messi, who at the age of 39 is still failing to live up to expectations. “He is 39 years old, it’s incredible. There is nothing new to discover from my side. It was absolutely clear that he would play until he decided not to play. All our people support him and I hope everyone is proud of what he has achieved because he is the best player to ever stand on the pitch,” Scaloni declared.
As the press conference ended, Scaloni became emotional and the media gave him a standing ovation. He left the stage abruptly, needing a moment to compose himself after a night that brought Argentina’s World Cup campaign to a tragic end and left the country’s football future in uncertainty.
