When the day comes that LeBron James retires, he may go down in history as the player who generated the most interest and intrigue surrounding his free agency. Since his big decision to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat in 2010, there has been a frenzy whenever speculation has arisen that he might want to try out a new team. And 16 years later, that frenzy has flared up again as NBA analysts, fans and passersby are all on the edge of their seats trying to figure out where the controversial GOAT will play in the next NBA season.
Naturally, when trying to predict where James will land, people will cite the current roster’s ability to win a championship if James is included, potential team chemistry, and even weather patterns for the home team. However, during the conversation boardroomRich Kleiman At the CNBC Sports

While speaking with Kleiman, James addressed the topic of his free agency. He didn’t reveal which team he’ll be playing for during the 2026-2027 season, but he did shed some light on his decision-making process. After revealing that Bronny, 22, is his former teammate in LA and Bryce, 19, plays for the University of Arizona, he turns his attention away from his sons to their almost 12-year-old daughter, Zuri.
James talks about how he came home for the Fourth of July holiday, and he pulled Zhuri aside and said:
“Baby, I’m telling you, I don’t want you to hear this from anyone else, but I won’t be playing for the Lakers next year. I’ll be playing somewhere else, so I won’t be home all the time. And you may not have an answer right now… I just want to know how you felt about it, because you mean a lot to me, you know. It means a lot to me to be away from you.”
The Ohio native reaffirms that family is very important to him in his next career move, especially Zuri and his wife, Savannah, as they are still at home. Additionally, he mentioned that people are egging him on to make decisions, and his response is, “It’s not just about the team.”

Best guess on where LeBron James ends up

As of publication, most experts and insiders have narrowed the LeBron lottery down to four teams: the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers. From the moment James said he was leaving LA, the Heat and Warriors have been at the top of my list of most likely to sign him. With the Heat, he has a coach he has worked with before in Erik Spoelstra, a president he is familiar with in Pat Riley, and he has previously bought into the Heat culture. Also, I have to think that the prospect of playing alongside Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo is very attractive. And despite what some people say, there’s a chance the Heat will become a championship contender with James.
As far as the Warriors go, James probably thinks it’s a dream to play with Steph Curry, Draymond Green and possibly Jimmy Butler. James, Curry and Green, in particular, have gone from rivals to colleagues (Curry and James played on Team USA in 2024, and Green and James share an agent in Rich Paul). And Jimmy Butler is historically one of the league’s best playoff players (he got the nickname Jimmy Buckets for a reason). Although I wouldn’t predict that the addition of James to the Warriors trio would lead to a championship team, it would at least be a lot of fun to watch.
The biggest selling point at Warriors is location. If Savannah and Zuri are really influencing his decision and they would prefer him to play closer to where he has made his life for the last 8 years, then it is tempting to play for the Warriors, some 370 miles or so from Los Angeles.
Ultimately, we have no way of knowing for sure where James will end up until he makes the big reveal. Thankfully, I suspect that will happen soon.
