Kobi Manu’s England disappointment: Six weeks on the bench and a pre-season defeat for Manchester United’s rising star
Kobi Manu’s summer has turned into an exercise in frustration, with Manchester United’s prodigious midfielder left on the England bench throughout the World Cup. While United supporters anxiously scanned pre-season training images to catch a glimpse of his breakout talent, Manu has been absent – not because of injury, but because he has spent the last six weeks as an unused substitute in Gareth Southgate’s squad. Manu’s promotion to England’s World Cup roster following an extraordinary finish to the campaign under Michael Carrick was widely celebrated. Yet, the reality of Manu’s England experience could not have been more discouraging. Despite Tuchel’s claims that every member of the squad understands their role, Manu – who started alongside Declan Rice in the last European Championship final – has found himself behind Eberechi Eze and Reece James in the central midfield hierarchy. The situation came to a head when, during England’s match against Norway, Tuchel opted to replace Rice at right back instead of his only available central midfielder, sending Manu to the bench once again.
Throughout this ordeal, Menu has displayed remarkable professionalism, avoiding public complaints or disagreements. Still, it’s hard to ignore what Manchester United have lost in the process. Had Manu not been called up to the England squad, he would have benefited from a much-needed period of rest and, crucially, the opportunity to integrate with new midfield partners such as Andre Santos and incoming signing Youri Tielemans during United’s pre-season preparations.
Michael Carrick, who sees Manu as a cornerstone for the upcoming campaign, may now be forced to re-evaluate his early season plans. With Manu deprived of valuable pre-season minutes, Carrick was left with no option but to rely more on Santos and Tielemans to establish their chemistry in the center of midfield. Former United defender Wes Brown, who experienced the World Cup sting without game time, highlighted the challenges players face when returning to club football after such disappointments, and stressed that even the most talented players must rebuild understanding with teammates on the training ground.
Manu’s summer with England, which was intended to be a platform for the next phase of his meteoric rise, has instead become a cautionary tale about wasted opportunities and the precarious balance between club and country. As the Premier League season approaches, United and their young star must now act quickly to regain the ground lost during a wasted six weeks on the international stage.
