JSW Greentech Limited, the electric vehicle arm of the JSW Group, has announced its first commercial sale of the AMPSTAR electric truck. The landmark order comprises 100 units of the AMPSTAR 4×2 55T electric tractor trucks, which will be deployed for heavy-duty industrial haulage at JSW Cement’s Vijayanagar operations.
This comes right after the AMPSTAR 4×2 and 6×4 tractor-truck platforms received official Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) certification from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The first new order marks the brand’s rapid transition from launch to actual road deployment, taking place just a little over a month after AMPSTAR was first unveiled.
Ecosystem Collaboration & Industrial Route Details
The commercial deployment operates through an integrated ecosystem involving multiple group and logistics partners:
- BaaS Provider: JSW Eco-Mobility (a subsidiary of JSW Greentech) acts as the Battery-as-a-Service provider.
- Logistics Partner: Operation is managed in partnership with Paradeep Parivahan Limited.
- 330-km Dedicated Freight Corridor: The fleet of 100 prime movers will move clinker and slag along an approximate 330-km route connecting Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh to Vijayanagar in Karnataka.
- Swapping Infrastructure: JSW Eco-Mobility will construct four dedicated battery-swapping stations along the Nandyal-Vijayanagar corridor to ensure continuous fleet operation.
- Monthly Cargo Capacity: The electric fleet is projected to transport approximately 1.25 lakh tonnes of industrial cargo every month.
- Environmental Impact: Over the contract period, the electric fleet is estimated to save around 4.5 crore litres of diesel fuel and eliminate roughly 6,250 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
Vehicle Specifications & Powertrain Performance
Engineered specifically to tackle harsh Indian commercial haulage conditions, the 55-tonne prime mover delivers heavy-duty output figures:
Executive Statements
Highlighting the scale of this commercial rollout, Sumit Mittal, CEO of JSW Greentech Limited, stated:
“The 55T electric tractor truck, first showcased at our AMPSTAR brand launch, represents one of the most demanding vehicle architectures in commercial transportation. In just over a month, we have reached a significant milestone, with the first 100 trucks being deployed for JSW Cement’s industrial freight movement, supported by JSW Eco-Mobility as Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) partner. With this, we are building an integrated electric mobility ecosystem, including a dedicated electric corridor with battery-swapping stations to enable the seamless movement of materials. This deployment brings together our full stack electric mobility solution to make electric heavy-duty transportation commercially viable. Our ambition with AMPSTAR is to be a catalyst in transforming how businesses move goods across India. These first 100 trucks mark an important step towards that vision.”
Sharing the industrial perspective, Narinder Kahlon, Director Finance at JSW Cement, added:
“At JSW Cement, we are committed to building more sustainable and efficient industrial operations. The deployment of 100 AMPSTAR electric trucks marks an important step towards decarbonising our logistics operations while supporting the movement of materials across our supply chain. With an integrated electric mobility solution backed by battery-swapping infrastructure, we aim to reduce our dependence on diesel, lower emissions and advance our sustainability objectives without compromising operational efficiency.”
Manufacturing Setup & Portfolio Expansion
All AMPSTAR commercial vehicles will be produced at JSW Greentech’s upcoming integrated greenfield manufacturing facility:
- Location & Area: Developed across 90 acres at AURIC in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
- Annual Capacity: Designed to produce up to 15,000 electric commercial vehicles (buses and trucks) annually.
- Plant Features: Equipped with an automated truck-cabin production line and an integrated battery ecosystem.
- R&D Base: Technical development and engineering are supported by JSW Greentech’s dedicated R&D centre located in Pune.
- Future Range Plans: Following the heavy tractor-truck deployment, AMPSTAR plans to expand its commercial vehicle portfolio into tippers and fixed-body dumpers.
My Thoughts
“JSW Greentech deploying 100 55-tonne AMPSTAR electric tractor trucks for real industrial freight movement within just a month of launching the brand is a massive statement. In the Indian context, heavy-duty commercial trucking accounts for a huge chunk of diesel consumption and logistics emissions. Most people assumed electric trucks wouldn’t be viable for heavy industrial haulage in India due to battery weight and range limits. However, by pairing a massive 430 kW / 2,600 Nm prime mover with a dedicated 330-km battery-swapping corridor between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, JSW is proving that zero-emission heavy logistics can work seamlessly at scale right now.”
