Josh O’Connor has spent the past few weeks quietly putting together one of the strongest menswear runs to kick off the summer. Promoting Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller around the world disclosure dayThe English actor served up a handful of extraordinary fits with the help of a new stylist, Jason Bolden.
The race kicked off in Paris with a quirky Lemaire look, consisting of a knitted V-neck vest over a patterned button-up with sleek black trousers. But the real show-stealer was the Cartier Tank Americana worn Above his sleeveA small but memorable style change, which was quickly corrected, according to Bolden. “It happened in real time,” says the stylist, whose roster includes Michael B. Jordan and Sebastian Stan are also included. Josh was like, ‘This watch is great.’ I said, ‘It’s a shame you can’t see it.’ This is great.” Then he put the watch on over the shirt, a move that could easily amount to a menswear spoof; Here, it worked. The yellow-gold played well against the rich chocolate shirting. More importantly, it indicated that O’Connor and Bolden were not easing into anything.
The next day brought a cobalt blue Dior logo T-shirt, sleek white trousers and black loafers, followed by a custom Dior look for the official Paris premiere – an all-black ensemble anchored by a cashmere cable-knit jacket that landed somewhere between a fisherman sweater and an evening tailcoat. “This is Jonathan Anderson at his best,” Bolden says. “Josh felt really comfortable in it, which is something you don’t hear people say when they walk the red carpet.”
O’Connor’s partnership with Bolden is relatively new; Until recently, he worked for years with Harry Lambert, the stylist best known for shaping Harry Styles’ edgy wardrobe. Consider this a new clothing chapter. “He’s such a great artist that he loves to just explore and let other artists do their thing,” says Bolden, who first connected with the actor earlier this year at Anderson’s first couture show for Dior, where O’Connor serves as a house ambassador. Being the face of Dior menswear certainly has its perks: Bolden shared ideas taken from the runway collections, and Anderson and company provided custom looks.
When disclosure day As the tour landed in London, O’Connor wore two different suits one after the other. First came a beautiful black double-breasted number, which had enough sparkle to catch the daylight. The next day, he stepped out in a generously cut, soft suit from The Row, paired with a classic striped button-up. The exaggerated lapels, turn-back cuffs and Jacques Marie Madge frame added some Hollywood flair. Then it was across the Atlantic to New York, where another Dior suit waited – this time, a cornflower blue tie with a white blazer and black trousers. Bolden remains faithful to the double-breasted silhouette. “I always think it’s a little more dressy,” he says. However, the Dior double-breasted blazer trend came to a halt when O’Connor opted for a margarine-yellow Dior shirt for his appearance. The Tonight Show.
