Aprilia has officially confirmed that Jorge Martin will attempt to return to the MotoGP grid at the Malaysian Grand Prix, following a serious wrist injury sustained during last weekend’s Australian GP sprint race at Phillip Island. The 2024 world champion crashed while fiercely battling for victory against main title contender Marc Marquez, resulting in a fractured wrist that forced him out of Sunday’s race.

Martin’s withdrawal from the main event was compounded by heavy weather conditions that ultimately led to the cancellation of the Australian MotoGP race. This sequence of events handed Marc Marquez a crucial 10-point lead over Martin in the championship standings.
Nevertheless, the Mallorcan star has travelled to Sepang with the aim of competing this weekend, though his participation remains contingent on passing a fitness test scheduled for Thursday.
Martin: “We have to assess the situation day by day”
“I’m receiving all the necessary treatment to recover and arrive at Sepang in the best possible shape,” Martin stated ahead of the race weekend. “It’s impossible to make any predictions. We have to assess the situation day by day.”
His cautious optimism underscores the severity of the injury and the challenges he faces returning to full race fitness so soon.
Sepang a difficult track for Martin and Aprilia
Sepang has historically been a challenging circuit for Martin and Aprilia. The Spaniard suffered a heavy crash during the 2025 pre-season test here, triggering a prolonged injury crisis that limited him to just seven Grand Prix starts last year. He also missed the 2025 Malaysian GP and the 2026 pre-season test due to recovery from surgery.
Aprilia’s struggles at Sepang extended beyond Martin’s personal woes. Despite securing three victories in the last four races of 2025, the factory team’s best result in Malaysia was a modest 10th place finish by Ai Ogura, with teammate Marco Bezzecchi finishing 11th.
These performances highlight the uphill battle Martin faces not only physically but also in extracting competitive pace from the Aprilia machine on this demanding circuit.
High stakes for the 2026 title fight
Martin’s potential return at Sepang carries high stakes. Should he pass the fitness test and race, it could prevent Marquez from further extending his championship lead. His statement reflects a pragmatic approach to recovery and competition: “We have to assess the situation day by day.”
The Malaysian Grand Prix looms as a critical juncture in the 2026 MotoGP championship battle, with Jorge Martin’s resilience and determination set to be tested once more.
