Joan Mir’s nightmare season continued at the German Grand Prix, as the Spanish rider suffered his twelfth crash of the year, underlining the continuing run of bad luck that mirrored his previous campaign. The No. 36 rider once again failed to finish, cementing a pattern that has plagued his 2024 MotoGP season and leaving him well behind his teammate Luca Marini in the championship standings.
Mir’s latest setback came at the opening round of the Sachsenring, where he was battling straight behind Marini and aiming for an overtake before disaster struck. “It’s really a shame to end the weekend like this. I started the race well and was wheel to wheel with Luca, just waiting for the right moment to try a pass and then chase the Yamaha riders. I lost the front in the last corner and our Sunday ended there. Luckily, I’m OK, but this situation is really disappointing. Now we have time to recharge and come back after the break with a clear mind,” Mir said of the race. Said after.
The statistics paint a grim picture. Of the 22 races so far, Mir has crashed out in more than half the races, with only one weekend managing to see the checkered flag in both the sprint and the main race – at the Czech Grand Prix. The only exception to his series of DNFs is his technical retirement in Thailand due to crashes. What’s even more worrying is that Mir has suffered double crashes in one weekend on three separate occasions this year: in Brazil, at the Circuit of the Americas in the United States, and in the Netherlands. In Austin, after crashing in the sprint, he dropped to 15th, although he was originally fighting for a podium finish.
Despite demonstrating competitive pace and repeated top ten finishes, Mir has struggled to convert the momentum into results. His only podium finish of the season, achieved in Barcelona, was later stripped due to a tire pressure violation. The contrast with Marini is clear: while Mir is 18th in the standings with 26 points and twelve non-scores, Marini is tenth with 53 points.
Last year at the 2025 summer break, Mir was 19th in the championship with 32 points and the same number of twelve blank results – a mirror image of his current problems. As the MotoGP paddock enters the summer hiatus, Mir will be desperate to reset and find a way to reverse his fortunes when racing resumes in August.
