Jake Dennis cruised to pole-to-flag victory at the Sanya E-Prix on Hainan Island, as Formula E’s emphatic return to China after five years capped a weekend of chaos, crashes and title drama.
In a race that turned the championship leaderboard on its head, Dennis powered his Andretti machine to victory, allowing teammate Felipe Drugovich to complete a one-two for the American team. Emerging rookie Pepe Marti surprised the paddock by finishing third, his first Formula E podium, while Jaguar’s Antonio Félix da Costa and Maximilian Günther rounded out the top five after 45 minutes of topsy-turvy action on the sun-drenched roads of Sanya.
The stakes could not have been higher. Formula E’s highly anticipated return to Hainan for the first time since 2019 brought the championship title fight into uncharted territory, and the Sanya Circuit delivered nothing short of mayhem. Championship leader Mitch Evans suffered a nightmare afternoon, as a series of events unfolded in his race, leaving him stranded in 17th place. Title rival Oliver Rolland fared even worse, losing in spectacular fashion, while Edoardo Mortara’s hopes were dashed with an early retirement – a trio of disasters destroyed the title race and opened the door for new contenders.
The controversy did not end here. Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein, another championship contender, had his day ruined by a time penalty, reducing his final position to 14th. The race stewards were busy throughout, handing out penalties for a series of infringements as the tight Sanya circuit punished every mistake.
Reflecting on his emphatic victory, Jake Dennis said, “With so much at stake and so much chaos around, it’s incredible to win here from pole. The Andretti team gave me a perfect car, and we kept it clean while other people were losing their heads. It’s a great result for us in the championship.”
Felipe Drugovich immediately praised the team’s performance, saying, “A one-two for Andretti is incredible. The whole team worked hard and we executed the plan perfectly. I’m proud to bring home this result.”
Pepe Martí, still reeling from his first podium, said, “I can’t believe it. To be on the podium in my rookie season, especially in a race like this, is a dream come true. The race was very strange – I just tried to stay out of trouble and bring it home.”
Even though the Andretti garage was in celebration, the mood elsewhere in the paddock was one of disbelief and frustration. Mitch Evans, who was clearly looking frustrated, summarized his disastrous day: “Nothing went right. Every time I tried to make progress, something else happened. That’s racing, but today was brutal.”
With just a few rounds remaining, the Sanya E-Prix has blown the championship wide open. Dennis’s revived form has put him back in contention, while Evans, Rowland and Wehrlein will need to regroup quickly if they are to salvage their title hopes. As Formula E heads towards its season finale, the changing standings of the points table will force teams to rethink strategies.
The result of Sanya will echo across the board. As the championship battle tightens and tempers rise, the next round promises even more fireworks. Who will pick up the pace as the pressure increases? One thing is certain: after the chaos of Sanya, nothing is predictable in this title clash. The race for electrical supremacy is well and truly alive.
