The biggest frustration of owning an adventure vehicle isn’t the lack of capacity – it’s keeping all your gear organized. Between camping equipment, recovery gear, bike equipment, cooking supplies, and camera bags, the back of the Toyota 4Runner can become a rolling junk drawer after just a few trips.

To solve that problem, I installed this Solid Wood Works Dual Drawer Storage Kit In my sixth generation Toyota 4Runner. After using it on camping weekends, mountain bike trips, and everyday adventures, it’s already changed how I pack, organize, and access my gear. Here’s how it’s fared so far – and why it’ll face its biggest test yet on an upcoming road trip from North Carolina to Colorado.

What is the Solid Wood Works Dual Drawer Storage Kit?

This Solid Wood Works Dual Drawer Storage Precut Kit is a vehicle-specific rear cargo storage system built for the 2025 and newer Toyota 4Runner. My version is a 6th-gen 4 Runner kit, but Solid Wood Works also makes pre-cut storage kits for a large lineup of adventure vehicles, including other 4 Runner generations, Land Cruiser, FJ Cruiser, Ford Bronco, Subaru Outback, Lexus GX 470, Ford Ranger, Ineos Grenadier, Tacoma, Sequoia, and more.

Solid Wood Works builds the 6th Generation 4Runner kit from black Hexply birch core material and ships it flat-packed with pre-cut wood pieces and hardware. The company offers precision-CNC cut kits and lists assembly time at about 1 to 2 hours, though you may want to factor in a little more time if you’re building it alone. Triangular relief cuts on the outside of the box help reduce weight while maintaining structure. Once installed, the main drawer system adds two large drawers and side cubbies to the cargo area.

Solid Wood Works also offers several add-ons for the base drawer kit. Buyers can add a 60/40 split bed extension, false top that creates a flat work surface or camp prep area, drawer dividers for better interior organization, and a fridge slide for access to the cooler or fridge.

Solid Wood Works offers separate versions for the hybrid, Trailhunter hybrid, and non-hybrid 6th generation 4Runner. The size of the non-hybrid kit is 36.8 inches long, 42.25 inches wide, and 13.2 inches high, with the interior drawer dimensions being approximately 34.75 inches long, 17.1 inches wide, and 9.33 inches high. The hybrid version keeps a similar footprint but reduces the overall height to 8.25 inches, with the interior drawer height listed at about 6.5 inches. The current version does not work with 4Runners equipped with the third row seat.

Solid Wood Works Dual Drawer Storage Kit First Impressions

The first thing I noticed after installing the Solid Wood Works drawer kit was how much quieter the back of my 4Runner felt. Before drawers, every trip started with the same cargo-area conundrum: camp gear in one bin, tools in another, recovery gear stashed wherever it would fit, and a few loose items floating around because I told myself I’d “organize them later.” Later he used to come only occasionally.

The drawers cleared it out almost immediately. I keep bike gear in the left drawer and camping and recovery gear in the right, but the setup doesn’t seem to stop once in use. When I’m not camping, the right drawer gives me extra space for first aid gear, recovery equipment, trail tools, and other items I want to have easy access to instead of having them buried in the bottom of the bag. Now packing doesn’t feel like reinventing the cargo area every time I leave the house.

Drawer access has been one of the biggest real-world wins. With my bike rack dropped into the bottom slot, the drawers still open completely, so I don’t have to dismount the bike to grab a piece of equipment, pump, first aid item, or gear before or after a ride. The same benefit comes when camping or during road-trip stops: I can get what I need without tearing out the entire back of the truck.

The drawers slide cleanly, feel controlled when extended, and give the rear of the 4Runner a finished look that’s hard to achieve with a quick DIY setup. I’ve noticed a little drawer noise on rough roads, but nothing that makes the system feel loose or incomplete. The biggest test comes this summer, when I take the 4Runner from North Carolina to Colorado with several weeks’ worth of gear. For now, after some use camping, riding, and day-tripping, the initial verdict is clear: This kit takes the dirtiest part of my adventure rig and makes it feel dialed up.

This kit is available for Hybrid, TrailHunter Hybrid and non-Hybrid 6th generation 4Runner models, with optional add-ons that include a 60/40 split bed extension, false top, drawer separator and a fridge slide. The base system gives buyers a clean starting point compared to a scratch DIY drawer build, with add-ons that can make the setup more useful for camping, cooking, biking, recovery gear, or long road trips.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Solid Wood Works Dual Drawer Storage Kit

Pros

  • Makes organizing the cargo area and accessing gear much easier
  • Full drawer access with bike rack in lowered/drop positions
  • Cleaner, finished look than most DIY drawer setups
  • Flexible setup and organization options

Shortcoming

  • premium price point
  • Adds weight and height to rear cargo area
  • Slight noise from drawer on rough roads or rough terrain

Is the ticket worth buying?

The Solid Wood Works Dual Drawer Storage Precut Kit won’t replace ends like tires, lights, or a roof rack, but it replaces a part of the rig I use constantly. The rear cargo area feels cleaner, smarter, and much less cluttered.

For my 4Runner, the biggest win is how much more useful the rear of the vehicle feels. The drawers give everything a home, and the false top provides a work surface when I’m storing bike equipment, packing camp gear, or preparing camp food. Between the bike gear, camp gear, and usable counter space, the setup now feels like a mobile bike shop, camp storage system, and kitchen-style counter. That’s a pretty big jump from ditching boxes in the back of an SUV.

The drawer’s slight noise is noticeable on rough roads, and the price puts it firmly in premium-upgrade territory. Still, the value adds up once you stop wasting time looking for the same gear over and over again. Time is money, and apparently there’s no point in emptying half your truck to find a tire plug kit.

If you camp, ride, hike, road trip, or just want a neat way to manage gear in the back of your SUV, this kit is easy to recommend. And even if you’re not driving a 6th-gen 4Runner, Solid Wood Works’ extensive lineup makes the brand worth a look if your own rig needs a better way to handle the mess.
