How do Canadians listen to audio?

  • 9 out of 10 Canadians listened to some form of audio yesterday – and half of it is ad-supported. However, according to new research from Signal Hill Insights, podcasts only get 9% of all ad-supported audio time in Canada. The study states that music is listened to 2.5 times more on YouTube or streaming services.

    • How does it compare? According to RAJAR’s MIDAS study, podcasts account for only 6% of audio in the UK; GfK says 8.9% of audio in Australia is ad-supported; But Edison Research’s Share of Year says 20% of ad-supported audio is in the US.
    • Meanwhile, across the US TV landscape, Nielsen reports that streaming services were responsible for 48.6% of total TV usage in May. YouTube is at 13.8%; Netflix is ​​at 8%.

  • YouTube is making custom thumbnails available for YouTube Shorts and giving more control over how they look.

  • In the US, the ABC News Podcast Network has launched a subscription channel for its 20/20 true crime show through Apple Podcasts. Subscribers will receive early access to exclusive content and new series before public release.
