fit and comfortable

The regular fit is very comfortable. My father’s condition is not too bad, and I can move around without any restrictions, whether I am fishing or relaxing at home. The arm length is great, and I love that the thumbholes keep the sleeves tucked in, protecting my arms and the back of my hands from the sun. The hood provides plenty of coverage without restricting my view or making me feel like I’m suffocating. The only time this shirt is not extremely comfortable is when it is incredibly hot and cool, when no shirt would be comfortable.

Rating: 8/10

Breathability and moisture management

While Patagonia claims the material is lightweight (at just 6.2 ounces), it’s not the lightest—Feeling Shirt I’ve ever worn. It feels thicker when wearing it, which also means it feels less breathable than other sun hoodies I’ve worn. This may be one of my go-to sun hoodies, but on cool mornings and windy days I’m grateful to have it. The Capilene Cool Sun Hoodie does a good job of drawing sweat away from my skin to keep me cool most of the time. I only sweat a lot in this shirt when it’s cool and warm.

Rating: 8/10

Warmth and Versatility

This is the sun hoodie I wear on cool mornings and evenings because it’s warmer than my others. I’ve worn it in the heat of spring and summer in Oklahoma and the cool summer days of northern Michigan. This is a shirt I can wear all day long in varying temperatures and still be comfortable.

Rating: 8/10

Durability and construction

After several months of wear, the Patagonia Capilene Cool Sun Hoody has not deteriorated or faded. Despite being worn on several trips and washed repeatedly, it still looks new. On most of my shirts the logo or graphics are the first to fade, but so far the logo has held up pretty well. The stitching holds up really well, and I haven’t had the material tear despite hiking in the woods and crossing barbed wire fences.

Rating: 9/10

Odor Control & UV Protection

The Capilene Cool Sun Hoodie was designed for UV protection, not odor control, but it doesn’t have an unbearable odor, even after a long hot, sweaty day. Whether I’m in the water all day or out in the open fields of my farm, I have yet to get sunburn while wearing this shirt.

Rating: 9/10

Style and everyday use

My teenage daughter doesn’t think I’m stylish, no matter what I wear. However, I don’t mind wearing this shirt everywhere. I’ve worn it to church, running errands, and fishing without thinking twice about it. I don’t mind wearing this shirt every day (when it’s been washed).

Rating: 9/10

price

As one might expect, Patagonia has priced this sun hoodie in the premium price range at $89. It’s a little expensive for my liking, but I’m also quite cheap. If you are a buy once and buy once type of person, you won’t have any issues with the price. Compared to other sun hoodies, it holds up well and is priced similarly to premium hoodies, but there are definitely less expensive options available.

Overall Rating: Patagonia Capilene Cool Sun Hoodie Review

After wearing the Patagonia Capilene Cool Sun Hoodie in the heat of Oklahoma and cool mornings of Michigan for the past several months, I’ve been very impressed with it. It keeps me cool when needed and warm enough to stay comfortable. I’m very impressed with the durability, and my biggest complaint is the price, but that’s to be expected from a premium brand like Patagonia.
