Honest Mystery Tackle Box Finesse Bass Fishing Kit Review

There’s a unique charm to purchasing a package that you don’t know exactly what’s in it. This is why there has been a recent increase in ripping of Pokemon and sports cards. Will what you get really be good, or is it worthless? It’s always a gamble. I recently had the opportunity to play a similar gamble MTB Finesse Bass Fishing Tackle Kit. What is the specialty/mystery tackle box?

If you haven’t heard of the Mystery Tackle Box, it’s a monthly subscription or one-time box of fishing tackle. Sometimes, like the Finesse kit, the box is tailored for a specific style of fishing; Other times, it is prepared for a particular fish species.

What’s included?

To be honest, I am not a skilled fisherman. I would much rather throw a crankbait, spinnerbait, or blade jig than a Ned rig. But I’m forcing myself to become a more versatile fisherman and I thought this MTB Finesse Kit was the perfect way to continue that process.

I received a package of one sticker, ⅛ size Mustad Shakey Head hook, Zedman TRD Krause, Zedman Trick Shotz, Zedman Herkluse swimbait, V and M Baits Finesse Jig, Moondog Bait Company Ned Rig plastic and Black Label 7” Soft Plastic Worm.

For the price, I’d say the value is there, but I’d probably prefer to choose my own gear rather than buying things I’ll never use.

Ease of casting and use

I first rigged a V and M Finesse Jig on my Finvik HMG 7′ 6″ medium-fast action rod and an Abu Garcia Revo Rocket Size 20 spinning reel. I could easily launch the jig to the edge or middle of my small pond, but I wasn’t getting bites, so I switched to Mustad Shaky Head Jigs with a Black Label 7″ worm.

Once again, I had no trouble choosing this pair. After catching a nice bass with this setup, I switched to the ZMan HerculeZ and started sending it across the pond. Overall, everything was easy to cast and use. So, I think it’s great for a beginner who is just starting to collect his fine tackle.

Hookup ratio and fish reaction

I caught a big warmouth while throwing a nice jig, but I don’t think the bass were in the mood when I was throwing it, even though it looked really good. When I switched to a 7″ worm, I immediately started getting more bites. I missed the first bite, but I think it was just a small bluegill that wasn’t big enough to get into the mouth of the hook, because it felt like a normal fast little beak.

On the next cast, I set the hook on a 2-pound bass and reeled it in. I would say the fish response and hookup ratio is great for shakey heads and worms, so I switched to the Zedman HerculesZ to see how the fish liked it.

On the first cast with it, I had a big sunfish hammer. I explored that one again and concluded that I should start finesse fishing more often.

durability and longevity

ZMan plastics are known for being ridiculously durable, and they proved it on this trip. The Black Label Worm was just as durable as other soft plastics I’ve used, but it can’t compare to the ZMan plastics. Unless I get hooked, I expect to be fishing with a jig and hook for a very long time.

Versatility and Conditions

Since I’ve got so many different baits, I think this kit is pretty versatile even though it’s a great kit. The jig is great for most situations, and the small swimbait should get bits in a variety of environments, too. A friend of mine uses a Shakey Head whenever we go fishing. Overall, I should not have any problems getting bites with these lures.

Whether you get a subscription or a one-time box, you’re not saving any money on tackle. This is where my biggest beef comes from because I can go out and buy all this stuff separately for the same price as the box.

The value comes from being able to experiment with new things you wouldn’t normally buy. Just don’t fall for the “you’re saving money” talk because when you add it all up, you’re paying retail prices for tackle anyway.

I’ve used other MTB kits in the past and I wasn’t as impressed with them as I am with this kit. Maybe it’s because I’m moving past my power-fishing mentality, but I honestly enjoyed using this kit, plus I actually caught a lot of fish with the tackle. You get enough variety for fishing in most situations, and it’s quality gear, not the cheap stuff you often find on places like Amazon.
