Honda's affordable electric scooter strategy could reach millions of riders starting in Vietnam

Honda can lay the foundation for its next global success story by bringing affordable electric scooters to mass-market riders. The company is expected to begin manufacturing the UC3 electric scooter in Vietnam as early as September, and use the country as a launchpad for a broader strategy focused on low-cost urban mobility and local manufacturing.

The UC3 is unlikely to become Honda’s next iconic model, but it could serve as a blueprint for future electric scooters. It has a 6 kW motor, a fixed lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and a claimed range of about 122 km (76 mi), putting it in the same practical commuting category as conventional 110 cc scooters.

Vietnam has become a major market for electric two-wheelers, making it an ideal testing ground. Through 2025, VinFast delivered over 406,000 electric scooters and e-bikes in the country, proving that the demand already exists. Honda is reportedly targeting the same entry-level segment, aiming for a retail price of under 30 million Vietnamese dong, around €980.

Local production will allow Honda to reduce manufacturing costs, shorten the supply chain and respond more quickly to market demand. More importantly, it creates a scalable production model that can then be replicated in India, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Latin America and parts of Africa, where affordable motorcycles remain an essential form of daily transportation.

The project also supports Honda’s comprehensive electrification strategy. The company plans to launch around 30 electric motorcycle models worldwide and reach annual sales of four million electric two-wheelers by 2030. Additionally, it continues to explore different charging solutions, including CHAdeMO compatibility and swappable battery systems, recognizing that different markets require different infrastructure.

Instead of focusing on premium electric motorcycles, Honda is pursuing the same philosophy that made the Super Cub a global phenomenon: affordable, practical transportation designed for millions of everyday riders.
