Shockwaves are rippling through the MotoGP paddock as Honda’s carefully constructed 2027 rider line-up is torn to pieces by a dramatic internal power play. In a surprise move, LCR team boss Lucio Cecchinello is demanding that Honda make changes to its factory team plans – insisting that Brazilian sensation Diogo Moreira be promoted, potentially at the expense of Moto2 talent David Alonso.
A few weeks ago, Honda’s blueprint for the 2027 season seemed untouched: Johann Zarco was locked into LCR due to a new two-year extension, Fabio Quartararo was set to make a blockbuster switch from Yamaha, and whispers were about Moto2’s David Alonso moving to the HRC factory garage with Quartararo while Moreira remains in LCR. Will continue our development. But beneath the surface, tensions and doubts are simmering – and now, the whole structure could collapse.
This change has not come out of nowhere. Honda, once the undisputed power of MotoGP, is struggling to recapture its former glory after years of crushing defeats. Big-name departures—Joan Mir and Luca Marini are both set to exit after 2026—have forced the Japanese giants to gamble on youth and fresh blood. The gamble seemed to be paying off with the anticipated arrivals of Quartararo and Alonso, both of whom were expected to lead Honda’s return to the top. Yet, as Alonso’s Moto2 campaign has faltered – with inconsistent results and flashes of talent failing to translate into championship dominance – Honda’s confidence in its chosen future has wavered.
Enter Lucio Cecchinello, the hugely ambitious LCR boss with a reputation for nurturing raw talent. According to former team manager Oscar Haro, who discussed the situation in detail on NicoabadTV’s YouTube channel, Cecchinello left no stone unturned in private conversations with Honda’s hierarchy. “The most logical thing is for Diogo Moreira to go to the Honda factory team and for David Alonso to go to LCR, but that has not happened,” Haro revealed. He insisted, “It is logical for Moreira to go to the HRC factory team with Fabio and for Alonso to stay with Zarco. I have spoken to Lucio and he told me that the most logical thing is for the young people to stay in the LCR, because Honda supports them for the young people, and it (Moreira), who they know, goes faster to the official team. It is the most logical; I am not saying that it has been done.”
The implications are huge. Moreira, who has shone in his debut season by scoring 43 points and consistently outperforming expectations, is under contract with Honda until 2028. His meteoric rise has made him the hottest property on the MotoGP transfer market, and Honda’s factory squad are now under intense pressure to fast-track his promotion – especially as doubts loom over Alonso’s readiness for the big stage. Insiders suggest Honda could even go as far as canceling Alonso’s contract entirely, although such a move would be drastic and potentially damaging to the brand’s relationships with young talents around the world.
If Honda heeds Cecchinello’s words, it would thrust Moreira straight into the spotlight, joining superstar Quartararo as the leaders of Honda’s next great era. Meanwhile, Alonso could be forced to cut his teeth at LCR, learning the ropes away from the glare of the factory spotlight. The reshuffle will not only reshape Honda’s trajectory, but could also cause a domino effect on the MotoGP grid, as teams struggle to react to the unexpected shakeup.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. Honda, desperate to restore its damaged reputation, must decide whether to double down on its original plan or focus on Cecchinello’s young and proven approach to speed. One thing is certain: with Moreira’s star rising and Alonso’s future hanging in the balance, the 2027 season promises to be fireworks before a single wheel has been turned. The coming months will decide not only the fate of the two young riders, but also the future direction of MotoGP’s most famous team.
